Basically Id like to get a new graphics card, my only problem is that i dont really want to change my motherboard as well as the graphics card. so what Im attempting to do is get a graphics card thats better than my current (NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT) which will still run on my (what i think is a) PCI slot, suggestions would be fantastic. p.s. the only reason i think the slot is PCI is that i cant really find out, the best i could get is in the properties section of the card, theres a line that says- location: PCI bus 1, device 0,function 0 Thanks guys.
The 8600 GT is a pci-e card so I think it should be alright for some higher end cards. Whats your budget anyway?
It's probably a pcie slot. Tell us which motherboard you have, or atleast take a photo of it and post it here. Also post the full specs of your pc, including the power supply.

http://www.piriform.com/speccy the only part you should need to even touch your PC for is the PSU which is on a sticker on the PSU itself, it'll be a box at the top or bottom of the case
Wow!, thanks man, its perfect. I kinda owe you one.
You really should check your computer specs before you buy anything. For all we know, that "3.2GHz dual core" could be a Pentium D. I also assume you meant 4 gigabytes of ram. There's no point in buying a powerful graphics card if your cpu won't be able to keep up with it. And make sure you have a good enough power supply, the 4890 can consume quite a large amount of power.

I suppose it could run on a 450W power supply, but it might be a bit tight. What brand is the PSU?
PCI-express!? really, thats awesome. budget i would say about £120-£140
Oh ok.Then I would suggest you get the HD 5750. Cost about 129.99 Euros. It's DX11,has eyefinity, quiet, cool, and low power consumption. 450W should be just fine. About performance, it performs on par with the GTS 250. Not that bad but it's definitely weaker than the HD4850,HD4870 and HD4890 in performance. But it's more power consumption and cost more and not DX11. But if you can, get the HD 5770 which performs better then HD 5750 and it's as good as GTX 260. Price is 159.99 Euro. If you can, try to increase your budget another 20 bucks. Then you are good to go. Decide :)
For someone who doesn't know much about computers and their specs, I'd suggest a vidcard with low power requirements. Preferably a card that doesn't even require it's own 6 pin power connection. This gives you the best chance of getting a card that does not require more than your current power supply can handle, and would make the installation as simple as possible. In the ATI 4xxx series, 4650 DDR3 version(not DDR2)or 4670 will do IF you are gaming at 1280x1024. They are both low cost, low power cards and will outperform your 8600GT. Better would be a 4770, a more powerful card closer in performance to a 4850. In the 5xxx series, a 5670 is not as high performance as the 4770/4850 but it would be a good match for an older dual core(if that's what you have). A 5750 would obviously be better but costs a lot more and wouldn't perform better if your CPU was the bottleneck.
Thanks guys youv all been a great help, unfortunatly peb, the priform program isnt working for some reason? Yes, you can buy an PCI-E card. I'd go with Radeon 5670 because it doesn't require additional power.
The CPU is quite decent, so that shouldn't be a problem. Like LiquiD said, a 5670 would be a good upgrade. If you have a 6pin pcie connector on the PSU, then 5750/5770 would be good choices since they don't require really much power.
well thanks to all that helped me decide, i going to be getting a 5750 just so you know and i hope to meet your lovely selfes again. thanks.
