Hi, I'm going to start learning martial arts soon and am wondering which type of martial arts would be most effective. Karate seems to be most popular, but I'm not too sure its the best one to learn.
So if facepunch could could help me find the most effective, badass style out there, it would be greatly appreciated.
Matter of opinion. I would watch fights featuring different fighting styles. See who beats who.
And some fighting styles do well against some but fail against others.
Sort of like:
Bob kicks Joe's ass. But Mike kicks Bob's ass. And Joe kicks Mike's ass.
Every MA are difficult to learn and take years of practice, you are not going to do some Bruce Lee shit before 10 years. And there is no best MA, each one focus on different parts of the body.
Somewhat true, I just believe that karate seems a bit stale and rigid in my opinion, would rather learn something like muay thai.
Would still greatly appreciate it if anyone could list some effective styles.

Obviously I won't be doing backflips over 20 foot walls and taking on 50 people at a time and doing handstands on my fingertips before 10 years, probably way more. But i'm quite willing to put as many years as it takes to master whatever MA I am learning, I'd just like not to spend those 10 years learning some uneffective MA.
Learn Krav maga. Its the most effective if you actually get in a fight.

Holy shit.
just join an mma gym and take all the classes they offer. my favorite martial arts are taekwondo and judo but it might be harder to find gyms that teach those
Aikido's pretty good. My old sensei put a few thugs on the ground with it, and told the cops to pick them up. You don't even have to be all that buff for it to be effective.

Aikido is the 20 year MA though. It is very effective if you stick with it.
Krav Maga or any hand-to-hand combat systems developed by the army of your choice.

Place this in your arsenal of martial art skills.
Remember: The cheapest and most effective way to survive a mugging is to give the mugger your money.
Martial arts are good, fun way to exercise, but don't join just to find out how to fight back against muggers.

I can say that Sho Rei Ryu is pretty simple and enjoyable, though. I tried it for 2 years but quit because 150 knuckle push-ups per class wasn't very fun.
Wasn't Systema very effective?
