Use avast! in combination with ad-aware, and you should be protected.

Avast! is pretty good if you can get past the interface.
Also, are you sure you're not thinking of Avira with those pop-ups. AVG has never thrown anything in my face, whereas Avira springs screen filling adverts seemingly at random.
