AVG free is pretty much absolute shit, better than nothing though. Also try "malwarebytes anti malware" and "Spybot - Search and Destroy"

AVG is shit, because it tabs down full screen things when it needs you attention, and it doesn't find all the viruses, and it drains a lot of computer power, and ... I used to have AVG free, but it sucked, and I got avast! Use avast! in combination with ad-aware, and you should be protected.

Also, are you sure you're not thinking of Avira with those pop-ups. AVG has never thrown anything in my face, whereas Avira springs screen filling adverts seemingly at random.
