I know most games have the ingame option to switch between DX9/DX10, but the particular game (Splinter Cell Conviction) doesn't have one and automatically switches to DX10 if it is available. For irrelevant reasons, I'd like to force it into DX9 mode. Is there a way through the Catalyst Control Center or some other means?

Agh, there are some other games that do this like Dirt 2 but this is weird.
I've never played Splinter Cell Conviction, but there must be something in the directory that causes it to do that. There is a dll that makes it switch called d3d9.dll or something like that but I wouldn't rely on it.
If I still have Conviction installed I'll try what Alex said and report back.
Are you sure the game supports Dx10 at all?
Well, as far as I can tell there is nothing to really help me out with .dlls and config files within the game files. Are you sure there's no way I can just 'disable' it through the CCC or some addon?

Incidentally, the filename for Conviction levels are '.ass' files
You could try enabling Xp sp2 compatibility mode. I think that reverts it to dx9
