why would you preorder retail?
Makes more sense than pre-ordering a digital game.
How exactly?
Let's see, Digital (like GOG, Origin, Steam) makes the games accessible via account on the programs which you can install with simple clicks and so, it's can be accessed from almost any computer no matter where you are. Retail on the other hand, is on a DVD which has to be installed from, but you can activate it on your account by writing in the CD key. Personally, I'd deal with .PDFs as manuals and not having to get a plastic case to carry the disc.
When are CDs getting replaced? Since CDs aren't burnt so much these days, we're gonna re-release old games as ISOs or "BINs and CUEs" (image files, .CUE is for the CD's music tracks and .BIN is the data files. CDRWIN rules!)
EDIT: Don't believe in EA anymore, they mostly do games and downloadable content just to profit. They were good people back then, but became terrible when they thought about their failures (such as the 3DO)
Unfortunately, buying a digital game cannot be done with cash (You'd either need a credit card, or redeem a Steam code for some Steam money). Physics boxes on the other hand, can be bought with cash.
I've looked at GameStop when I was on my way back home from school today, there were boxes of €50 for Steam

The time spent downloading the game VS You going to the store and picking it up, putting in the DVD, and installing it

Pre-loading.
Pre-loading.
Half of the time it still needs content to be downloaded after release.
Pre-ordering was something you did so you were guaranteed a copy on release day. AAA titles usually sold out pretty fast so a pre-order would net you a copy without having to wait.
Digital copies don't run out.
You don't get preorder bonuses like % off or promos

Fair enough for US gamers but in Europe internet speed is not an issue.
