Action RPG.
You essentially control one hero character and use his abilities and with your teammates destroy the enemy team's defenses (usually towers in these types of games) and then their base while defending yours. getting kills gives you XP to level up and gold to buy stat altering items.
That's Dota, and every other game in this genre in a nutshell.
I don't think that DotA 2 will be as popular as Leauge of Legends is now. I could be completely wrong, but I don't think people are going to switch from LoL or even regular DotA to go to DotA 2, 'least that's my opinion.

The same thing could have been said of LoL of HoN when those were first coming out.
