What are the recommended specs for a minecraft server? VPSs dont give much RAM so how much lag should i expect from a 512mb RAM server?
A lot, minecraft needs at least 2.5gb to run as a server.
[editline]22nd January 2011[/editline]
Its very resource intensive.

Well this is for 8 people MAX. And when i test out my server on my laptop it works with 348mb RAM

I use a server that only has a gig of RAM and it runs fine with 5 people on at the same time. I haven't tried it with more since it's a private server but it doesn't require 2.5GB for 5 people. Maybe the secret is that I am using CentOS?
OK, i will look into the one with 1gb RAM.

I've run my server with 1GB of ram for minecraft with 20 people on it and never had a problem, What are you on about?
I don't get the people going "It needs +2GB" as I've ran a VPS with a very big world map, 20 players and tons of monsters, and it used 1GB of RAM

Doesn't need very much at all!

That was very helpful.
The reason people say minecraft requires high specs is because playing minecraft ingame on SMP makes everything look really laggy so you blame the server.
In reality it's Notch's shitty coding having terrible lag compensation which fucks things no matter what.

Eh, the fact it's coded in Java is part of the problem.
Don't know about Notch's coding though.

If you don't mind a UK minecraft server I can host you for free.

Funny that, because the goldmember server likes to eat at least 2gb worth of memory, lowest is at least 1gb.
However that could be down to the series of mods it has on it.

I'm not sure, me a group of friends were interested in our own VPS, mainly for learning purposes. We are in the United states so I would rather have one on this side. Thanks so much for the offer though.

I will make mine 100% vanilla.
If you don't limit the ammount of RAM avalible, it just sucks it dry till it crashes from lack of more RAM.
Limiting it to 1GB will give a little jitterishness when loading new areas of the map, but beats paying $10 extra for enough RAM.
But can't I just run around the map and explore before going public to stop this?

Also, how many people can i expect to sustain comfortably on this server:

Notch is a shit coder, therefore he uses Java. If neither of these existed, it would be a great game.
I don't blame it all on Java. Once his "network" programmer starts working I'm hoping for better speeds, and less resources. (incoming optimistics)

If the creator of minecraft didn't exist minecraft would be a great game?
If the creator of minecraft didn't exist minecraft would be a great game?
Yeah, because a better coder would make it. Someone who knows C++ or the like.
So, can anyone tell me how many I can reasonably host on this server?

Any reason why you rated me dumb?
That server would support a shitload of players.
Yeah, because a better coder would make it. Someone who knows C++ or the like.
Shit you can be dumb at times. Notch is the one at fault here, Java has little to do with it, there is obviously going to be a slight increase in resource usage as Java required the virtual machine to run instead of just running flat out like a C++ application, but it is more due to Notch and his coding habits that it is slow.
That server would support a shitload of players.
So 12-18 players?
Keep in mind, that burst RAM isnt the RAM available. 1GB would be the normal amount
That server would support a shitload of players.
When you say shitload of players, i think of 128-256.
Oh, I forgot Tools told me how many. OK.

How long? I expect to run mine 24/7 with maybe some downtime at like 3 in the morning.

Well Profanwolf hosts the Facepunch server, which I think he limited to 1GB RAM. It holds up to and over 20 players fine it seems, with mods.

Java is an amazing language, mainly because it can run on damn near anything thanks to it using its own architecture, stop shitting on it.

not the best language for games though..

It's amazing for small applications that needs to be cross platform, but making anything "big" with it usually ends with tears.
