Hey guys, me again!
I have amassed a cute £450 and have decided that I want to build a decent rig. I don't want to be blitzing through Crysis or anything, just a few modern games on medium or low and was wondering if this build is functional and all the components mesh.
I still need a monitor and a keyboard.
I have Windows 7 Home Premium inbound and it has discs for both 32 and 64 bit, so if you can just let me all know what works and what doesn't in the list below:
What I have so far:
PSU: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-186-CM&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=
Graphics Card https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-194-AS
Disk Drive: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-122-SA&groupid=701&catid=10&subcat=951
CPU: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-250-AM&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1328
Hard Drive: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-206-SE&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=
RAM: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-192-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=817
Motherboard: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/167785.
Case: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/115480
Total cost: £375.
Now, what do you guys think? ANY help is appreciated :)
not a bad deal 2 3850's are about on par with a 4850/8800GTX
Oh good :) I think I'll probably buying them, if I recall correctly, PhysX is an Nvidia thing only, but I'm not bothered with that :)
So...will I need to get a new PSU and is my motherboard choice limited by the graphics card?
that case is shite and the PSU might be of the sort terrorists strap to themselves
[editline]11:04PM[/editline]
for the case either go Coolermaster or maybe an Antec 300, and make sure you don't skimp on the PSU EVER
[editline]11:05PM[/editline]
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-037-OC hopefully this'll come back in stock in time
Many thanks :)
oh and MoBo choice no unless you plan to use multiple cards, or you're buying a card that uses PCI or AGP instead of PCI-E but you don't see many of them
Erm...Motherboard has little choice unless I plan to use Multiple cards? Sorry, I'm a hardware noob :(
I meant no it won't affect your choice unless you plan to use two cards because you'd need more than one PCI-E slot, however what CPU you choose will because they have different sockets for different generations and AMD and Intel use different sockets as well
oh and go ASUS or Gigabyte for the motherboard
Right, thanks for the help :)
I'm assuming I can't use an AMD card and an Intel CPU?
EDIT: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-087-LG Is there anything preventing me from using this disk drive thing? I don't really care about Blu Ray and only want 1 disc in at a time :S
EDIT2: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-186-CM&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat= Is this good for a PSU?
Right, thanks for the help :)

Umm you can't use a AMD CPU on a Intel board, and vice versa. But graphics cards work on any Intel and AMD cpu boards as long as there connections are right.PCI-E,,AGP.

Right, thanks :) I think I'm learning more about hardware than I am from my A level teachers at the mo :P
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-122-SA&groupid=701&catid=10&subcat=951 doesn't use huge bloody IDE cable
and yeah that'd be fine but 500W is all you need really and the ModXStream lets you take out cables you don't need for better cable management
also I think the 3850x2 has 1 6-pin and 1 8pin for power? can anyone confirm this? I think you'd have to find an adapter or something
Thanks again :)
For the CPU, is this a good deal: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-250-AM&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1328 Taking into account my budget :S
And...what does 1 6-Pin and 1 8-Pin mean?
And...what does 1 6-Pin and 1 8-Pin mean?
power connectors for the graphics card
power connectors for the graphics card
Right, thanks :) I assumed so, just wanted to be sure :)
usually if a card needs them it's just 1 or 2 six pins but sometimes it's a 6 and an 8, it depends on how much power the card needs
damn you slow additions to my posts, when will I learn so I can save my automerges
So yeah, hunting for a motherboard atm, and a case...
I'll update the OP with your suggestions :)

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-206-SE&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat= Is this a good hard drive? I found one £10 cheaper with 250Gb, but I figure better safe than sorry :S
EDIT2: For RAM, is this good? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-192-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=817
1 more Edit :P Is this Motherboard okay? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-357-AS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1482 from what I can tell it supports the CPU, but I can't find a mention to supporting Crossfire....
And http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-049-CT&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat= for a simple case?
Right, I think my list is all done guys. I just need an OS and a monitor. What can you guys recommend? Is 7 worth it?
Xp/Linux
Any particular reason why XP? I don't want to get Linux, never used it before and Windows gets the job done...
Xp/Linux
Haha no.

Don't listen to him, grab Windows 7.
Righto, 7 it is :)
And for a monitor, what's the average? The lowest on Overclokers seems to be around 22"...
http://dabs.com has some great deals on monitors.
Thanks :) Monitors are more expensive than I thought...Didn't you used to be able to get a decent one for £20? Oh well, thanks :)
Though I'll buy WIndows 7 from there, it's cheaper than on Overclockers ^^
[editline]10:46PM[/editline]
Sorry for the double post, but editing doesn't show anything new to people looking at threads and I kinda need help :3:
Is it possible to get a better Graphics card, cheaper than the one I'm currently planning on buying? because I'm about to buy WIndows 7 and the graphics card, so...make or break. Can it or can it not be done?

That graphics card is THE cheapest you can possibly get for that level of performance

Great, that's all I need :) I'll buy that, thanks guys :)
Double post again, sorry guys!
I just need to check this all fits together, noob at hardware, getting my cousin to help build but he's not here at the mo. Are all the components compatible?
