Hi everyone. I'm getting a new HD for this Dell Dimension 4600 computer. I'm thinking on getting it a SATA drive, since they are supposed to be faster than IDE drives. My only question is, do I want to get a strictly capable 1.5 GB/s hard drive or one that supports 3.0 GB/s? I don't see it worthwhile wasting money on one that can't use the bandwidth it's mean to use. (I know 7200K drives can't transfer near that speed, I'm just saying respectively.)
Thanks for your help and research.
You might as well get a SATA II (3.0Gbit/s) drive, if you ever get a new computer you could use the drive and utilize the speed. It not a real huge difference in price either.
it doesn't have SATA

Hmm? According to this it has two SATA I ports - http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/dell-dimension-4600-for/4507-3118_7-30529709.html?tag=mncol;rnav
it probably predates SATA

also owner of a similar one, it doesn't

Similar, how similar? Inspiron? I for sure know there is some type of SATA port inside of it. So sata I you say? I guess I will go with a SATA II then. Thanks, guys.

Ah yeah that is pretty important, I know some of the newer drives like the 1TB ones don't have a jumper to change from 150 to 300 mode. Make sure you get a drive that has that jumper.

Ok, will do. One final question. I'm going to be getting a new cd/dvd drive, since the cd and dvd drives we have are borrowed. So I think I'll get a CD/DVD combo burner. It most likely will be SATA but does the type (SATAI/SATAII) matter? And will I need a special power cord for it if it's OEM and the power supply doesn't have a second one?
Once again, you can't use SATA

unless they did some other Dimension 4600 other than this

Mmm... I'm very certian I can. I've opened that puppy up, and I even have a small sata hard drive running in it. (That one's borrowed too, which is why I'm looking for a new one.) There are two sata ports actually, just like everyone's been saying. I'm not sure if you've been reading in the wrong places or what, but I know for sure there are sata ports. Maybe you have a very early version of the respective dell motherboard or something.
god fucking damn I hate dell even more now
next you'll be telling me you got a graphics card slot as well

The question is, do you want me to? :P
Well, if you do, keep on readin.
Has an AGP slot, supports X1, X2, X4, and X8. Used a GeForce FX 5500 on it.

Dell had a Dimension 4X00 series going, so there's many "different" Dells with different slots, ports and specs in same type case.

I don't understand why. Do you think dell undercut you? Lol. Well, I guess if you even have something as old as that, no SATA, no AGP, upgrade man. Try building.
google siw.exe
might be wis or something
it will tell you everything you need

But does it actually show disconnected ports? And would it show the speed?
Derp.
I know, they wouldn't name a series just to put one in there
fucking dell making 6 years of my life a misery with their fucking propriety bullshit

For an example:
The Dell dimension 4200 only had a celeron processor running at 2,4 ghz, no sata and agp port, and only a dvd rom optical. drive
not far off, ours had a P4 and can't remember if we ever had to swap the optical
not far off, ours had a P4 and can't remember if we ever had to swap the optical
Might have been a Dimension 4300, the 4400 had a AGP port AFAIK.
But does it actually show disconnected ports? And would it show the speed?
it should
Well, I just made sure to say Dimension 4600.
Thank you everyone for your help on this. And... lol... this is my first topic of Facepunch that hasn't gotten it locked or me banned for some stupid reason. w00t.
