This thread is just to let FP know, in case anyone actually wants to give it a go.
Apple is celebrating it's 10,000,000,000th app download by giving away a $10,000 itunes gift card.
That's right, simple as that, If you DL the 10billionth app, you win a $10,000 itunes shopping spree.
The article I found/quoted:

The Countdown Timer:

^ Just watching this timer countdown is amazing, hundreds of app downloads a second.
Why on earth would you need $10,000 in iTunes credit? Pretty sweet idea though, Steam should do something like it :v:

well apple pretty much gives away $10,000 and then they get it back
that is why it is an iTunes giftcard

Ah right, I didn't think of that. I shall rate myself dumb.
It'll be me.
Some 13 year old got the 1billionth and got a a Macbook, 10000iTunes, and some more stuff.

Don't even have to buy an app to enter it, and you can do it 25 times a day.
I've started a countdown that, when it's done, alert me at the exact moment to submit the entry form. It only took me a few minutes and I might have a chance.

Tell me how and I'll give you 55%.

Doesn't work like that, I'm afraid.
Think of it this way: what happens when you buy an app? If you pay with a credit card, Apple skims its percentage off of the top, and then wires the rest to the musician/developer/w/e. If you buy a card from a store, The store sends your money to Apple, after skimming of its commission, and then you get your goods from the store when you redeem your card, which you've already paid for.
The thing happening here is that Apple gets its money at the point of sale - where you hand over the money - and hands over the goods after payment. That's crucial here.
If Apple were to give you a $10,000 gift card, you don't pay them a thing - there is no point of sale, so Apple doesn't get any of your money. But, when you redeem that card, Apple still has to send the product's owner their share of the money, regardless of the fact that you never gave them any money in the first place; Apple actually loses money on this.
This is balanced out, though, by the rush of sales as people race to that ten billionth download - this should more than account for the few thousand dollars lost on copyright holders' royalties.

How about if anyone wants the countdown site, I'll PM them and I get 50% if they win. Does that sound fair?
Yes, now hook me up bro
Aw fuck. I must've messed up in my math somewhere. The countdown on apple.com is moving way too fast. I'm going to redo my math later tonight. Sorry.
Wow, the Apple timer really is moving FAST.
It looks like they got over 27 million app downloads since yesterday.
At that rate they should hit 10bn in less than a week.

Holy Crap! Another 40 million downloads since I posted this last night.
I would guess it'll hit 10bn in just two or three days from now.
Download when its 9,999,998,whatever or 9,999,999,whatever
9,873,140,000 and counting.

If you look at the countdown. It's not possible.

If we say that Apple get's 30% of the song bought, that's 7000$ they're giving away, assuming that the one who get's the gift even buys for those 10000$, which I don't think is the case. 7000$ is nothing for a bg company like Apple, and I'm sure that they will get those money covered by the extra downloads.
can you win if you download a free app
can you win if you download a free app
yes
I looked about an hour ago and it only just reached 9,900,000,000. Now I just looked and it already reached 10 billion (apparently, maybe the timer just doesn't work right when viewed from in iPod idk). How is that possible?

No, it's around 9,901,000,000 right now.
Oh okay just messing up for me then :(
can you win if you download a free app
no purchase or download necessary. A purchase or download
of any kind will not increase your chances of winning.

9,929,000,000+ and counting, I'd say it's gonna happen in the next 24-48 hours.
We are closing in. Good luck to everyone.
1000 apps in 3 seconds
20000 apps in 1 min
1200000 in 1 hour
28800000 in 1 day
70170000 downloads left
So, just under two and a half days left.
