so basically what they are saying is
someone can do basic math and is proud of it
Too bad a ton of those sales were immediately on eBay.
I just found out that my college has a Vive room set up, so I'll be heading in there hopefully today to give that thing a try. I believe they have the Portal demo ready to go. It'll be nice to see if it's worth the money.
Makes you wonder, the oculus rift was sold at a loss so the vive might be as well.
Nice way for HTC/Valve to burn a hole in their wallet.

You mean just like how every console is sold?
I don't think volvo will be running out of hat money just yet.

They're sold at a loss mainly because the technology and means of production will get cheaper as time goes on. Think how the Raspberry Pi is, the reason it stays the same price yet gets more powerful is because the components get cheaper.
They're most likely running at a loss now, but it's an investment that is projected to pay off.

On another note, since I live in Norway I have to effectively pay $1300 to have this kit on my doorstep, no thanks.

I figured microsoft/sony sold consoles at a loss since they could make their money back via development licensing fees. While Valve can definitely do this as they already take a cut from games sold through steam, I don't think HTC is a part of that racket, nor are they financially in a position to sell their device at loss. Besides, from what I understand, the lighthouse tracking system is fairly inexpensive, so aside from the cost of the screen(s), I could see a decent profit margin coming from Vive sales.
Here is a news article with BIIIIIIG numbers.
look, the numbers, how big they are

if only they typed the numbers out
The Vive isn't sold at a loss. So they've already made a large chunk of money regardless.
This nearly costs €1000 over here. I guess I'll have to wait a couple of years, great.
Doesn't Sweden have import tax on electronics like Norway? If so, it's even more than that :v:

not if it's shipped inside europe, which it is apparently
otherwise they really don't want it to get popular

Vive is not even close to selling at a loss nor is the Rift, the components and production run cost barely anything at volumes more than 10,000 units, they're simply doing the usual which is maximize profits, no sane company would actually sell something like this at a loss.

Really? Huh, you'd think with such new technology that they would actually be selling at a loss. Nevermind, then.

People like to throw the *new technology* line when talking about price of the headsets but almost everything in the headsets already exists.
Theres nothing new in the headsets, Gyros and accelerometer are cheap, IR tracking has been a thing since the wii, the only really expensive thing in the headsets is that custom 90hz OLED screen.
The only relatively new thing, as far as I know, is the software and the fact they put it all into one device.
€990
lmao no thanks

the screen has quite the density of pixels, higher than normal ones. and overclocked
so that's the only part really, and it still doesn't justify the price
it's for profit, makes sense in their eyes
I did the math myself and missed a zero. For a few brief, shining minutes, I thought this thing was worth $80 and I was totally going to jump on it.
Guess I'll have to wait another several months.
This is a toy for young adults in their mid twenties to late 30's with disposable income. I personally have been waiting for 4 years. I dont even blink at the price when ordering. Beceuse It is cheap compared to everything else thats been on market for first time.
If you think about 3D TV's they were more expensive than this when it came out. Or even cellphones.
Hell people pay up to 600-800bux for a new flagship smartphone every 1-2 years. Theres nothing crazy about this price for what you get the shipped box weights about 6KG thats weight of 2x , 1440p g-sync IPS 27 inch monitors which is also around this price point for only one screen which is also still kind of new tech. To anyone thinking they'll get this cheap for first 2 years they're out of their minds. This tech will be expensive for 3-4 years with some cheap offbrands that dont offer full expierence inbetween.
Honestly im glad that it will keep out the little xbox kids asking their soccor moms for now.
I've read the vive has way better tracking than the rift, I'd totally get this if you could play garry's mod and shit with it
[editline]1st March 2016[/editline]
I do want to try it though, what places will have demos?

Yeah and look how well they caught on.

Why would it matter to you if they got it or not? Honestly, if the little "xbox kids" bought a vive or oculus it would be nothing but good for VR.

Especially HTC which is basically in dire straits.
