If you want the average person (i.e your mum who will still use a contactless credit card despite having apple / android pay) to use the bloody thing you can't keep trying to reeducate them. Definitely a stupid move.

Considering Google is working on a new OS that is meant to be run on literally everything (Fuchsia), it makes sense to drop the "Android" part. It is better to rebrand it now, with the average consumer getting the updated app with the new name automatically. Then when they get their future phone with Fuchsia, they won't say "What the fuck is Google Pay"*

*Whether or not Fuchsia replaces Android is still up in the air, but even if there are devices running Chrome OS, Fuchsia, and Android, it makes sense to have an app that does the same on each platform have the same name.

Point still stands though, they should've just kept Google Wallet as their contactless payment solution rather than splitting it off into Android Pay and trying to make a not-PayPal style thing that no-one fucking uses.
