I wrote a review on Tropico 4, my mom and gram saw it, they think I should become a games journalist

Any info on that, besides the obvious jokes and saying on the industry? I am interested in the possibility of paid freelance work.
And if the mods don't like this thread, or this is the wrong thread for this kind of question, then they're free to close this thread.
The review by the way: http://steamcommunity.com/id/Happymartin/recommended/57690
You should review my Greenlit game, it's a procedural steampunk retro-8bit voxel based mine/building game based in the future when zombies have taken over the world and kawaii transgender anime schoolgirls have to survive.
Also it's only $50 and will be early access for the foreseeable future, but I'll send you a 20 if you give it 5 stars.

your avatar explains everything
Honestly, that's actually not bad. Your grammar and punctuation could use a bit of work, but it flows well.
However, I'm going to recommend you don't go into games journalism. It's a very difficult industry to break into, and there's little reward for it. If the journalism part interests you, see if you can take an internship at a local news organization or something. See what the job is really like, and make your decisions from there.
Aside from that, just keep writing. That's pretty much all there is to the field, so learn to write well. That's also really useful in everything else, not just journalism.
Maybe see if your college (assuming you go to college), or your local community colleges offer any sort of journalism program. It'd be worth checking out over the summer.

I'm sure I'd get those games :v: But honestly I'd rather be an honest reviewer, rather than just give 5s. Also I'd rather not do it "outta 10" or "outta 5".
It looks pretty good to me
Although the whole "Picture x but with y" thing in the intro is really cliche.
Be careful with what your mom says
My mom said that I should be some kind of master computer wizard after I put the antivirus to scan her computer years ago

Eh I figured it was best, what do you think could have been a better intro?

Well I mentioned freelance, I don't want a career in Journalism, just a nice little gig to earn me some cash while I wait to get into College. But I hear you out.
Well, nobody's going to hire a kid in high school, even freelance. You've got to have some hours under your belt before you can think about getting a job.
It's a hard industry to break into, like I said. I'm a Journalism major, and our curriculum is structured entirely around work experience, even in the Freshman and Sophomore years.
Also I'd like some links or suggestions of where to look for freelance gigs. Because I dunno where to look.

I should have mentioned, I'm a high school graduate.

Well, that makes things better and worse. You have a potential for internships, maybe, but not freelance. You'd be stuck with blogs and things if you went freelance, which might not be the best for you. There aren't a lot of major gaming outlets that take freelance stuff. Doesn't help that a lot of outlets hire inside the field.
Of course, you could always start running your own blog... It'd be a decent place to start. See if you can get a decent following, maybe get syndicated, and go from there.

Sounds like a good start. and I guess I'm just confused with what freelance means. I just want to do a little something, that's easy for me to do and I can work with, that can earn me some cash.

I just hope it doesn't put me in the situation where I end up emotionally crippled because of the negative attention.
i feel like with 15000 posts there had to be a handful of negative attention in there at some point

Yeah, but I'm certain I can handle it.

Wish me luck. I'll start with a re-review of Tropico 4. Any suggestions on making a decent first review? Pictures, video?
In that sort of vein, multimedia is what'll determine if you live or die.
Do it, and do it well.

Thanks. I'll begin writing tomorrow. Still, any tips on making a better review, out of my current Tropico review? pics or anything?

God, such a handsome user
Some of your wording needs a bit of work - these two things stood out in particular to me:
Which, while I kinda wish they did a revamp of models, I understand the sentament. The gameplay isn't broken, and the models are just visual representations of what they are.
Is this a good/bad thing? Aren't visual repesentations pretty important?
There are many additions to this game, some really add something to the game, others are pretty cool and add a bit, and some are just kinda meh.
Yeah, don't use those words. What are the additions? What sets it apart from earlier installments? You talk about them later on, but only after talking about the core mechanics - that's just weird pacing.
You spend a lot of time talking about the mechanics, but you really just describe them without saying anything about whether they're bad or good, or what could be improved. It's only the really the third addition that you comment on.
There's definitely things you could improve upon, and I wouldn't think about earning money on this so far, honestly. And if you're trying to start a gaming blog, you really need to have a gimmick, something that sets you apart. Try figuring out what that could be - it doesn't have to revolutionary, or a major thing, but you've got to have that edge, so you don't just end up being bland.
yeah those weren't my best words :v:
I'll have to take time and think harder on writing it out.
Also I'm not too sure what that gimmick should be, I wish there was some kind of list.
you shouldn't approach this with the expectation to make money from it, that's my advice. just do it as a hobby, don't rely too much on it being successful, that'll be less risky for you and also keep the content genuine.
I don't think outright stating in your description that you're only doing it for the (potential) money is particularly wise.
I just hope it doesn't put me in the situation where I end up emotionally crippled because of the negative attention.
On any job (Specially those where people read what you do) you'll have to learn to accept criticism, sometimes it will be constructive, sometimes it will be just someone being ignorant and hating you for the hell of it.

Well I'm kinda in a tight spot right now. I mean of course it isn't all money.
...but it would be nice :v:

Jokes aside, you actually did a good job writing that review. The comparing and contrating you did between Tropico and Sim City helped your point get across.
Thanks, also I just had a thought, it might actually take a bit to formulate the review proper, like how other well known reviewers do. I'll get a draft tonight.
Also maybe now that the question is answered I should close this thread and make a new one maybe?
