Yeah single player games can be fun, but the weirdest people that I ever seem to see online are those who stray from their single player only games and come online, it's like they're massive Sperglords or something. As far as I'm concerned, if my enemies can be humans instead of stupid bots, i'll take that option, unless it's a co-operative game where it is fun to work as a team with other people.

what a hilariously stupid premise. even his tongue-in-cheek comments don't disguise how strange of a thing that really is to say
I always play both modes, I like to get the full experience and value of my game. Multiplayer can be as fun as singleplayer, even more so in some cases. Playing BF2 or BFBC2 with a few friends is a lot more fun than playing it with a bunch of people you don't know. In the end, it all comes down to which mode was the focus of the game. In Battlefield games the focus is multiplayer, making it the better/more fun mode. In Half-Life 2, singleplayer is the main focus and it is the better mode. I always play both though, as they are usually both quite good. Also it seems like he's describing singleplayer RPGs rather than other genres of games, yet he's putting those who enjoy multiplayer FPS games in a negative light. It sounds to me like he just doesn't like a particular genre.
I grew up playing Singleplayer then Multiplayer and will always stick to that
I predominantly play multiplayer, as for literature and narrative of games, I generally don't care, that's why I read and watch films.
why is an old anti-social man writing articles for RPS is that their idea of trendy and attractive to readers?
You can tell the author isn't serious about this, but I do have to beg the question why they had to make an article about it (other than being out of ideas). Might be because I'm never a fan of splitting communities, even if it's just because of people not getting a joke. If you play Multiplayer, you usually just seek enjoyment from other things than in Singleplayer. Personally I'm a person that enjoys both; I'm usually a Singleplayer that enjoys a good story and characterization, but then again I cannot deny the shameful amount of time I've spent on TF2. I don't see why we can't just tolerate that and many people seek quarrel instead, just for the sake of putting distance between you and mic-shouters. IMO many decent people in Multiplayer tend to be quiet - and thus unnoticed - anyway. TL;DR Singleplayer and Multiplayer have very different services to offer; you can enjoy both and you can't really compare them most of the time since they focus on different things and thus deliver different services. So what's up with the hate?
I play Multiplayer for the social aspect of it. I play Singleplayer when I feel like loafing.
This is why I love Coop games.
Coop fucking sucks, because you always have one that's behind, and he drags the better player down inmost games. And if you never experienced this, you are the one who's dragging down. But regardless, I do the classic SP first, MP last thing, I always finish the campaign before I play MP.
I think his point is not that multiplayer is stupid (coop and such he would still consider drinking some fine wine), but he's just saying multiplayer is mindless entertainment while singleplayer usually is a bit deeper with a proper story and such. The only reason he wrote this is because all of those cod kiddies that buy their games just for multiplayer resulting in too many multiplayer oriented fullprice games. I think so anyway.

I play singleplayer because I prefer my experience of the game to be created by me and the actual content, not by some retard from Brazil.
I predominantly play multiplayer, as for literature and narrative of games, I generally don't care, that's why I read and watch films.
Well you're missing out. Games can sometimes surprise you in how interesting and deep their story is.

To be honest, you sound like one of those people who tries to finish as fast as possible by running ahead ignoring most of the things happening.

I still play Doom and I enjoy it a lot.
Singleplayer is the main entry, as multiplayer is the long long sweet desert. but it's the singleplayer that keeps you full.
I couldn't agree more, would oblivion be a better or worse game with 2,000 other people doing the same quests as you? would the portal 2 single player be better if your best buddy was there pushing you along? Would you laugh at the same jokes or choose the same options knowing other people can see you? Sure multiplayer oriented games will never be better than single player stuff just because bots are never quite as good as actual players but playing with friends will never be as immersive as playing by yourself, you might not even catch the whole story just due to mucking about
what game is this?
It's all up to opinions and preference. I prefer singleplayer as I can have a relaxing time strolling around a world (say Borderlands) where I can do whatever I want with no limits talking to the NPC's and pretending I am one of them using my imagination to make up a little dumb story and run around the world shooting everything I see. I think with Multiplayer the newer generations are getting used to being with other players instead of being on their own and trying to play with NPC's is like trying to talk to a brick wall with them. Opinions and Preferences, Nuff said.
what game is this?
It isn't a game, it's what playing singleplayer is really like! (In other news the screenshot's apparently from WoW, from their official site)
I hate competitive multiplayer games. To me they are utterly pointless time wasters full of assholes.
I hate competitive multiplayer games. To me they are utterly pointless time wasters full of assholes.
I don't really mind the odd game of tf2 or LoL but I don't understand how people can play those games as their main game of choice
that's a dumb spiteful thing to say considering the PC's had multiplayer focused games for fucking ages who played Quake 3 for the singleplayer?
There's a place for multiplayer, he never argued multiplayer is shit and shouldn't be played. He pretty much just argued multiplayer is taking over leaving fewer singleplayer games and even fewer proper ones. And to be honest, i quite agree. I like to play multiplayer games with others, but in the end i just want to play really awesome singleplayer games. But it works the other way around too. If there's too many singleplayer games i'd want some simple multiplayer goodness.
