Hey Im building my own Gmod server and adding a community to its website and Im wondering what forum software I should use. It would be used for moderate news and stickies etc. Aswell as a ban thread... Vbulletin(Facepunchs base, I think) Is out of my price range.
SMF

Don't get anything else. It's all horrible and security-hole ridden compared to SMF (I'm looking at you, phpBB.) The only better choice would be vB, and of course it costs a hell of a lot.
Looks cool, Will use.
Best of all, it's free
Holy fuck no don't use SMF use MyBB.
You could use:
phpBB
SMF
MyBB
Those are the 3 free forum juggernauts right now.

MyBB is the only good option.

How so.... Explain. Ive already set it up using SMF and works fine, Created a nice logo in fireworks then made a homepage in Dreamweaver @ school. So why not use SMF?
Invision is pretty good. There is also Wakaba if you want a more 2ch style system.

I'm not going to bother.

SMF is great too.

dreamweaver is fine as long as you don't use designer view

Then why use it?

It's a good code editor. It helps fill some things in for you and points out most errors in your coding. It's rather helpful. However, there are a few free alternatives to Dreamweaver that work about as well. cPanel has an excellent editor built into its file manager.

So does N++ or many other lightweight free text editors.
I mostly use Dreamweaver for either aligning images/organizing code/Seeing how my code works when Im finished. The actual what you see if what you get editor is sloppy and not worth it.
Vim > * for code editing.
last time I checked this wasn't a 'which is that best text editor' thread
Go for invision power board.
for free ones you can look at SMF, no idea about myBB though, never tried it.
Starting a community with $200 forum software isn't the brightest idea, but okay. Let me know if you need help with anything.
I agree with Compwhizii, I've tried all the major freeware forum software (phpBB, SMF, yaBB, fluxBB) and MyBB is the best.
He's buying a piece of forum software because Facepunch said so?
It appears.
Bought Vbulletin, very nice forum.

$149.99 one time - http://www.invisionpower.com/products/board/purchase.php
Or $10 per month:

This, a million times. Also, it doesn't gobble up resources for stuff it isn't using.

I agree. I'm a co-admin on a little "noone cares anymore" forum that uses VB and HOLY SHIT, does it suck. If I had any say or power or access to the server I'd fucking scrap it and start all over.
Bought Vbulletin, very nice forum.
You just have $200 laying around to spend on a site that will most likely fail?
