• Moving to Win7 - Question on backups

So I've got my student copy of Windows 7 professional x86 from MSDNAA. Burnt a DVD to boot from. Sweet. Now, I've been spending the last days backing up important stuff like My Documents, Pictures, the SteamApps folder (NOT re-downloading 62 GB of games... :P), savegames, the obvious stuff. But what about the critical stuff? I've already copied the recent GeForce drivers to my external harddrive, but what about drivers for all the other devices and components? For instance, will I be able to get sound immediately after installing Win7? Connect to the internet? As you've probably figured out by now, no I did not install my current operating system (Vista 32-bit) myself. I need a no-bullshit dummy explanation of the critical steps in switching operating system. Any tips are appreciated.
Windows 7 will install all (including critical) drivers for you. I recommend you download the latest drivers yourself after installing Windows 7 though, just so you're up-to-date.
That's a relief! Not sure if it matters, but I just want to make it clear that I'm not planning to "upgrade" to 7, I'm doing a clean install. I've collected so much junk programs & files that I just have to format.
Nope, doesn't matter. It supports loads of hardware right out of the box. So unless you're using a very, very old computer, you're good to go.
Alright, popping the DVD in now. Wish me luck :P

Good luck :D. [editline]08:15PM[/editline] I think I might try Windows 7 on my laptop :D. I want to play games on it agaaain. [editline]08:15PM[/editline] As much as I like Linux, I miss games on my laptop. And most other commercial applications.
I love this in W7.
It was a damn life saver, I have no Internet without my Wireless dongle (hurr, dongle), so the fact it worked straight away was a relief.
Alright, I'm on 7 now. One big issue however; My harddrive is not formatted. Everything is intact. It just seems like windows 7 got installed right ontop, without any formatting. I got suspicious when the installation took close to 40 minutes. Turns out it copied most of the content on my harddrive and dumped it in a directory called Windows.old; 176 GB in total. Great, now I have even less space available. Judging from instructions I read from somewhere I should have been given the option to format the drive, but I was not. Jesus christ, Sodom and Gomorra what do I do now?
When i switched(2 Days ago) i just deleted the Windows.old because I already backed up everything in there.
Useful I guess, but I had a complete format in mind D:
Judging from instructions I read from somewhere I should have been given the option to format the drive, but I was not.
There's a "format" button on the screen where you choose which hard drive / partition to install to.
Alright, I got it right this time :P Seems like Win7 can't detect my audio devices properly though. It won't detect my headset when I plug it into the front green/pink at all. I guess I need drivers, but what and from where? All I remember is that I had some Realtek High-definition-something before.

It doesn't take me anywhere. Still looking D:
