I haven't seen this thread before so I think i'll make one ---------------------------- Verizon Wireless Type: CDMA "After acquiring Alltel in January 2009, Verizon Wireless became the biggest wireless carrier in the United States. It was one of the first to offer a 3G network, a music store and GPS services, and it launched the first mobile TV network for a carrier. A joint venture between Verizon Communications and Vodafone, Verizon Wireless was formed in 2000 through a merger between GTE Wireless and Bell Atlantic." Pros Great coverage Offers widest selection of phones of any carrier Friends & Family option offers unlimited calling to a select group of numbers Cons Sub-par customer support Somewhat overpriced Charges a 10$ data plan fee on most non-smartphones Feature phones The droid lineup (Droid, Droid X, Droid incredible, Droid 2 etc) Leading carrier in android lineups ---------------------------- AT&T Type: GSM "AT&T is the second largest wireless carrier in the United States after Verizon Wireless, with 73 million subscribers. Today it offers a widespread network and arguably the largest and most varied selection of cell phones and smartphones. Originally formed in 2001 as Cingular Wireless, it changed its name to AT&T in 2007 to reflect its parent company. In 2004, Cingular acquired the now defunct AT&T Wireless." Pros AT&T's "rollover" plans let you roll unused minutes over to the following month As a result of being a gsm carrier, AT&T offers extensive international roaming Cons Dead zones in more "Rural" areas Many dropped calls Feature phones Exclusive carrier to the iPhone Samsung captivate ---------------------------- Sprint Type: CDMA "Following a 2005 merger Sprint Nextel is now the third largest wireless carrier and the second largest CDMA carrier in the United States. The company is retaining separate Sprint and Nextel brands for the time being. Sprint began wireless service under its brand in 1995, and Nextel was founded in 1987. Prepaid service is available only through its Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile subsidiaries." Pros Strong set of business friendly features (Push to talk etc) 4g network Very affordable Cons People have reported horrible service and billing Feature phones HTC Evo 4G [coming soon] Samsung Epic 4G ---------------------------- T-Mobile Type: GSM "The second-largest GSM carrier, T-Mobile, grew out of the former VoiceStream Wireless in 2001 when VoiceStream was acquired by Germany's Deutsche Telekom. T-Mobile operates one of the smaller U.S. networks of the big four carriers, but it has roaming agreements with AT&T and other smaller operators. In 2008, it launched its 3G network and last year introduced contract-free service." Pros Most affordable carrier in the US MyFaves feature allows you to call any 5 people how ever much you want Cons Uses a different band for 3G than AT&T and international carriers Reports of many dropped calls Feature phones Samsung Vibrant [x]Sidekick ---------------------------- US Cellular Type: CDMA "Based in Chicago, U.S. Cellular is a regional CDMA carrier serving 26 states in the Midwest, the Southeast, and the Northwest. Service is nationwide, but native coverage is only in the carrier's home area. In other places, you'll be roaming on Verizon's network, so it's not ideal for frequent travelers. The handset selection includes unique LG phones and BlackBerry devices. What's more, U.S. Cellular is one of few carriers to offer Kyocera handsets. Added features include e-mail and messaging, 3G, push-to-talk services, GPS navigation, and various entertainment options. " Pros Amazing coverage in mid-west/north east Free incoming calls Amazing customer support Cons No coverage on the west coast Small selection of phones Feature phones There really aren't any ---------------------------- Sources Most info was taken from here http://reviews.cnet.com/best-cell-phone-carriers/ These are all the Major Carriers in the US If you see any mistakes tell me and I will fix them
If at&t loses the iphone contract they're pretty much screwed. [editline]12:30PM[/editline] Also I love verizon's coverage, even out in the middle of nowhere while we're camping I can still make calls.
I use Verizon, for cellphone as well as FIOS(tv/landline/internet). Their quality of service is second to none, but yeah, you do pay for it. It is not in any way, shape, or form cheap to go with Verizon. And they can be assholes if you need to use customer service.
Always loved Verizon Wireless, they're one of the few carriers that have a cheap pay as you go plan without daily payments.
I have at&t for the iPhone. I used to have us cellular because they have excellent coverage up here in New hampshire. At&t is spotty some places. I like GSM better than CDMA because i can buy pretty much any phone i want without having to activate it through verizon. If iPhone goes to verizon i would switch for sure
ITT: The US Cell Phone Carrier thread
I use AT&T, I am actually on this website from work using my iPhone
I have Sprint and they are fucking cheap, and coverage is alright
You didn't put the Nexus One for AT&T
What about us Canadians :frown:
Verizon is easily the best in America They're the only ones with good coverage where I live.
You didn't put the Nexus One for AT&T
I had no idea there was an at&t version And i will do different countries upon request if you just tell me the carriers
Even though I don't have a phone (neither do my parents) this thread was useful. If I ever get one that is.
UK major competitors: (off the top of my head) Orange T-Mobile Vodafone Virgin Mobile I use Vodafone.
I don't know much info about them, so it will be a while before i have it up
What about us Canadians :frown:
All of them are pretty shitty. Here's some notes I've taken on most of the carriers. I have only dealt with Bell and Virgin Mobile, but I have done a fair bit of research on the other carriers. Bell: -just switched over to SIM cards a couple months ago, really slow to new technologies -customer service sends you around in circles -lots of dropped/missing calls. I've had people call me and my phone never rang, nor is the call logged on my side (but is logged on their side). Received voice mail days late. Rogers: +has a better phone selection, has SIM cards -apparently customer service also sends you in circles Telus: never dealt with them, but their internet is terrible Virgin Mobile: using them now. +really good customer service +has newer phones/better selection -uses the Bell network/got bought out by Bell a while ago. Wind Mobile: +relatively new carrier +uses their own network +good rates +has a coverage map (see below) -since it's a new network, there is a lot of dead zones. Coverage map Koodo: I've never dealt with them, but their advertisements are really fucking annoying. Also owned by Telus. Fido: Never dealt with them, I have some friends that use Fido and they seem to be doing fine. Chatr: Really new (only a couple weeks old). That should cover everything.
What about us Canadians :frown:
Welcome to the land of three year contracts, no competition and expensive data plans! Keep this in mind. Rogers is nice where you can get a 3G signal and their plans are very well laid out (Data plans are cheaper too), though when travelling I tend to see my BlackBerry Bold with the "SOS" icon, which means another GSM carrier is available though it's not Rogers. Bell has good deals on phones, making 3 year contracts somewhat worthwhile compared to Rogers and has dramatically more coverage than Rogers. The problem with Bell is that their plans aren't amazing.
Does it charge you for being on "SOS"
UK major competitors: (off the top of my head) Orange T-Mobile Vodafone Virgin Mobile I use Vodafone.
Don't forget O2.
isnt chatr related to rogers?
AT&T here with an LG Xenon. Added number onto my dad's phone bill... Even though I'm pretty limited, it's still better then what I had before from AT&T. The pay as you go plan is horrible. 1$ daily usage fees, 20 cents a text, and god forbid if I had a long conversation. My money flew out faster then a cat who had cold water dumped on it. Not to mention, if you're going to go with a pay as you go plan... Never pick an "expensive" phone. I had a Razr. It sucked. Cost way too much. Software was buggy as hell. But everything is a lot better. We had switched from Verizon because of, well, one of it's listed cons, horrible customer service. My best friend uses Virgin Mobile... Which I heard is quite affordable phone wise, because she has... A bad tendency to obliterate her phones. Or they break themselves. Through her life, I think she's broken about.... 20 phones at the very least? TL;DR: AT&T is cool, not the Pay as you Go, Verizon is balls support, Virgin Mobile = affordable phones.
A razr is expensive? Aren't unlocked like 100$ from moto? I got mine for 15$ on ebay
Chatr is the "EXTREME DEALS LULZ" subsidiary of Rogers.
I've always rolled with Verizon, and I don't have any problems.
Does it charge you for being on "SOS"
When that icon is there, it means the phone can only make emergency calls. I don't get charged since the phone can't really do anything cellular related in that state.
Verizon Wireless is SOMEWHAT overpriced? My girlfriend's plan was $150 a month (give or take), for everything unlimited. I have Boost Mobile (kinda meh quality on SMS messages to Verizon sometimes) and that's $50 a month, everything unlimited.
Well if i said Overpriced it would start a shitstorm and at the SOS thing that is so fucking stupid
Verizon doesn't have many good phones if you are looking for a phone w/o a $30 data plan.
And they have no good phones w/o a 10$ data plan
Switched to Saunalahti :colbert: 13,90€ a month for 2 years, 15mbps 3.5G connection, free 3.5G modem (worth 119€), multiSIM for free. So I can pretty much use 15mbps on my phone and 15mbps on my netbook/whatever at the same time. Finland is pretty much the best in the world. Oh wait.
