• Need help overclocking an E6550

I'm using a C2D E6550 on an EVGA 750i SLI board and I want to overclock from the stock (2.33GHz) to 2.8 or 3.0GHz. Can I get any help here? The last few attempts I have marred by issues, including the mobo posting in safe mode (with bad grammar, "Warning, Now in Safe Mode. Please resetting CPU clock speed or memory.) and resetting my clocks. Any help?
How are you trying to overclock it? E6550s are multiplier locked, so the only way to overclock it is by increasing the FSB clock, and that speeds up everything with it. You're going to have to increase the FSB while at the same time using the memory multiplier (if it's locked with the FSB speed) to keep the memory as close to the maximum clock of the RAM. You'll also have to change the multipliers for anything else that derives its clock from the FSB like PCIe/PCI slots and things related to the south bridge. This all assumes you have an after market CPU cooler, the stock Intel coolers are not made for overclocking and won't tolerate the extra heat. If you have a stock Intel cooler, don't bother.

None of these overclocks have been successful as my BIOS won't let the settings stick.
Are you doing huge steps like over 100 MHz at a time? You should try small increments like +5MHz.
I have been trying to go straight to 2.975, perhaps I'll try your way.
Lmao, seems like you have no idea how to overclock. You should probably read some guides on how to do it before you start, or you're going to fry something.
going straight to 2.9 without knowing if your chip can do it is going to have a good chance of breaking something.
Well, I can't know that since my board seems to not let the chip stay at that frequency. OC'd to 2.5 with no voltage changes, went unstable.
Yeah well the memory is overclocked when you overclock the FSB so you have to adjust the memory multipliers to keep the memory in spec. Same goes for PCIe and other buses that are tied to the FSB clock.
