I will be getting a laptop soon that will be capable of running games such a half-life 2.
My only problem is I can imagine it being awkward trying to play it with only the trackpad on the actual laptop.
I will mostly be playing games on my lap in the living room, so a mouse would be awkward to use too.
Does anyone have any experiences with this? Thank you!
Get a fucking mouse! Even if it's awkward to use, if you're planning on playing any games, get a mouse.
If a mouse is that big of a deal you can always use a 360 Controller

True that, I can get the good old DS3 tool and make my ps3 controller emulate a 360's.
Thanks mr fist.
If I remember correctly it took some work to get a Gamepad to work perfectly with source. A quick google search should find you a tutorial.
Just get a mouse and a cheap rigid mouspad. Problemo solved.

There was a period where I had no mouse and I had to use a trackpad for about a month or two.
And I got good at it.
Just practice with it and you'll be fine.

With JoyToKey I can get any game working with my gamepad with little hassle.
The mouse support is excellent, too. Which is great for my Logitech RumblePad 2. (the reason why the 360 controller is industry standard eludes me to this day.)

Alternatively OP, just get yourself a lap desk for cheap and use your mouse on that. I've been doing that for years and it works fine.
360 controller seems to be supported out of box for just about anything, which is why tons of people use it. PS3 controllers are less supported and you need a 3rd party program which, in my case, never worked.

But I assume you refer to gamepads instead of the PS3 controller
Well like you said, most games have an option to play with an xbox controller, and I have a program which makes my ps3 controller emulate and xbox one, making it usable on games. And if I'm right then source games, like half-life do not support xbox controllers? am I right?

If you're talking about the original Half Life (which actually uses GoldSrc), it doesn't.
But Source games (pretty much anything Valve made after Half Life 2) can use 360 controllers if you type "exec 360controller" into the console.
get civilization 5, its just as fun with a trackpad since there is no time based reaction stuff

Thanks, ill be sure to remember that.

Once again, JoyToKey allowed me to flawlessly use my Logitech with the classic Half Life. I don't see why it wouldn't work with a 360 or PS3 controller.
Just get a cheap-ass mouse. Unless you're fat, there should be plenty of room on the seat of the chair to use it - that's what I do, constantly.
As someone who has tried playing games with the builtin laptop mouse, I would definitely recommend getting a usb mouse. Its really hard to turn around in fps's, and the lack of a scrollwheel makes rts's a lot harder (for me at least). You can get a small table that fits on you lap, that can hold a mouse and laptop easily.
The one I use doesn't have a light or a cup holder, but it works well, and I use it all the time.

Beware: Once you get adjusted to using a marble mouse for games, you'll never, ever, be comfortable with anything else.

why/what the fuck
It may not be the most accepted (or suggested) option and it really depends on you, but you could try a trackball mouse. I've suggested trackball mice to others who thought they would hate them, but now they prefer them.
I blame my lateness on my phone. And its 4 AM and I'm stuck at work. But really, I use one, and while people think I'm insane, you don't have to try to move it on the couch/in the car, etc.
I've actually played for over a year on my trackpad, 5 months in though I had to rebind the left and right mouse click to q and enter because I completely wore out the trackpads buttons :)
