My brother is in need of a new computer for college and asked me to do the build. This will be my first build and I'm just wanting to make sure I've got everything right.
Here's what I have so far:

The budget is pretty tight so I'd prefer not to go more than a few bucks over $650.
Do you have any suggestions Facepunch?
ok, so out of those
Bad:
PSU - get at least 650w
CPU - its not exactly bad, its just Id go intel. but! if its out of budget stick with the AMD listed here
RAM - If your gonna get 8gb ram get it at 1600Mhz not 1333
The rest is pretty good though. Although id go for a coolermaster HAF 912 case instead
Another thing, If he wants it for gaming id go for a better card. GTX 560ti is a good option but it depends on your budget
Oh and If you want to save more money, (for now at least) Torrent The OS and just wait for windows 8 to come out and buy that. You dont have to. But its a suggestion, That way you can buy better hardware

Why the hell would he need a 650W PSU? Nothing in that computer will demand that much.
Why are you being an intel fanboy and not backing up your argument?
And suggesting warez? Really?
I do, however, admit I didn't notice the mobo was compatible with 1600, and I was going for a cheap case to help squeeze into the budget.
Is he going to utilize 8GB RAM? Build is pretty low power so I don't see him doing anything to warrant needing it.
no current mobo is compatible with >1333Mhz by default so you have to "overclock" it (just setting it manually)
doesn't matter anyway because the difference between 1333 and 1600 is unnoticeable outside of synthetic benchmarks which are pointless
@build in OP
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371030&Tpk=neo%20eco%20520w cheaper, a lot better in quality and power output
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233&Tpk=haf%20912 best lower budget case
are you completely sure he needs 8GB RAM, what will this be used for
if you do need 8 get this, if not get this
if you don't need 8GB or can spare a little more, the extra $15 for http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102939&cm_re=6750-_-14-102-939-_-Product will go a long way
I'll do 1333Mhz 4GB and that video card.
In terms of the PSU I went with the ModXStream because it was modular, I think I'll probably stick to that. It's also the same PSU I've got in my current build minus 100W
I'll also go with HAF 912

Update:

Any other suggestions?
the modxstreams are not great PSUs
the neo eco has a better OEM (seasonic), will be higher quality and outputs 480W on the 12V rail while the modxstream outputs 432W
modularity on a lower end PSU is pointless because you need to use most of the connectors anyway, if it were something like an 850W or 1KW with 10+ SATA, 10+ molex, 4/6 PCI-E and 2 CPU power connectors then sure there's plenty of cables you can remove without losing functionality
but when all you're removing is one string of molex and one string of SATA it's not worth sacrificing quality and functionality when you could just zip tie them somewhere out of the way

How is he being intel fanboy ? And that was not an argument he just said he would go with intel

But it's enough is it not?

He didn't give any reason why I should. Simple as that.

it's not a matter of is it enough, it's a matter of getting the most out of your money
a higher quality PSU is more likely to last longer, and when it dies is less likely to cause damage to other components if it dies
there's no point getting a worse PSU that costs more just because it has a feature that at this price range is just a gimmick

there's no way to fit a decent sandy bridge build into this budget without making pretty much any other part crap
for this price range a 955 is a much better choice and anyone who doesn't see this is either blind or fanwanking

Ehhhhhh. It's ultimately the same price since I'll be ordering today and can take advantage of a $10 off coupon on it.
then it's still a better PSU for the same price
[editline]17th July 2011[/editline]
let me put it this way, it's OEMd by seasonic so it's likely to be the internals from something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151094&cm_re=seasonic_520w-_-17-151-094-_-Product in antec casing with antec branding, in antec packaging and with antec's warranty and support services, for a lower price
then it's still a better PSU for the same price

And yet it's not, because it obviously doesn't have the same certification :v:

Both the OCZ and an Antec are protected by a 3yr manufacturer warranty. If it craps out, I can always get another.
Opening the unit reveals a traditional double-forward design with group regulation and more in common to the Seasonic S12II then the NeoHE indy design.
...
Edit: This unit is based on a unit that scored bronze in the 80+ tests but fell a bit short of that itself so maybe Antec is disappointed with that result and not promoting the unit for that reason.
you were saying
[editline]17th July 2011[/editline]
the warranty is there if something happens
buying products with warranty based on when something goes wrong is an incredibly shitty attitude
Alright, fine.
[editline]17th July 2011[/editline]
Ordered it all.
