Pretty ironic Blizzard doesn't trust their own audience when they will arguably buy anything. People still pay like $20 for a new copy of Starcraft.... THE FIRST ONE. They already got the initial money, stop hiding behind this DRM shit with quasi-reasons.
BUt doesn't everyone hate Battle.net?
So their excuse before was the auction house, now they have literally no excuse.
"persistent server-side character saves" That wasn't required in the past for offline play. "a seamless PC multiplayer experience" Uh, okay. Same here. "cheat prevention" Nah, I've seen enough in the first months. "and Real ID and BattleTag social features" Past games also worked perfectly without those. Just give the player a friendlist.
TBH this sucks a lot. I loved back in D2 days when you could play online with friends using your offline account. We could reset our characters a lot to try different builds and shit, it was great. I want to see direct TCP/IP multiplayer and offline game back, I really do.
