• Help my pal build a PC

Hey all, my friend is looking to get a new PC, and I'm not entirely sure on what parts he should get. His budget is $950, and doesn't plan on overclocking. It's for gaming and general use, but he doesn't play very many modern games. He has a 1TB external HDD already, so he'd prefer he got an SSD to put in the PC itself. Preferred OS is Windows 8.1. So, can anyone help me out here? Edit: Also, he needs a monitor too, preferably 1080p and 60Hz.

http://www.logicalincrements.com/ is a great place to look if he's going to assemble the computer himself. Many well updated part lists, most of the time. Although there are many different builds possible with a budget like that.

I guess I didn't make that clear, sorry. [editline]1st February 2015[/editline]
Does he need a monitor? Any peripherals or specialties like KB/M, speakers, headphones, wifi, etc?
He needs a monitor and a cheap keyboard, ideally he'd like something 1080p and 60Hz. Forgot to mention that in the OP.
Alright, so he's got a mouse? And I see you listed the budget in USD, is he in US?
Alright, so he's got a mouse? And I see you listed the budget in USD, is he in US?
Yeah. Charlotte, NC. He's got a mouse already, yes. He's also told me that he doesn't plan on building the PC himself and doesn't know anyone that can do it for him, so any help with that too would be great.

There are dozens of step by step guides that he could watch on his laptop as he builds the system. I'll have a build incoming in a couple minutes.

I'm not doubting that building a PC is easy, it definitely is if you know what you're doing, but he doesn't want to run the risk of messing up and ruining a part.
Alright, here it is. It is a bit over budget. If that cannot be worked around, let me know and I can try to trim down some parts. Overall even with newer games he should be getting great performance at 1080p, and it's a very low power system overall. Rather than the 4590, would the G3258 still be alright if he overclocks it? It's much cheaper and fantastic for general use/gaming. I also think a CPU Cooler would be good to have. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/zMvwpg
It would be alright, but obviously not as good in newer games. IIRC the H97 Anniversary can overclock the G3258, but I'll have to double check. As for the cooler, the 212 EVO is ridiculously overkill. People were hitting 4.6-4.7ghz on the stock cooler, something like the TX3 will still be more than fine.

This helps a ton. Thanks.
Things aren't looking fantastic for clock speeds on the H97 Anniversary. I'd just pop to the Z97 version if you can. It's about $16 more.
