My laptop is stupid.

If I play a newer game (Black Ops, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, etc.) my laptop runs it fine, then slows down a bit, and then shuts down due to overheating.
I tried reapplying thermal paste but that didn't fix it. The laptop's about 3 years old now.
So I figure I'll try playing some older (or new 2D) games. Some work okay, but many (like Red Alert 2) suffer from the same slowdowns as the newer games do.
For example: I start a mission in RA2, and it's running perfect. I hear the fans spin up instantly. After 10-15 minutes, the game slows down. After that it just gets worse and worse, to the point where it's completely unplayable.
What the hell is wrong with my computer?
power issues?
hmmm, probably not. But its a guess

It's a laptop, and it's plugged in.
I would think it's an issue with Windows' power settings, but similar shit happens in Ubuntu.
It sounds a lot like you are runnign the alptop in unfovorable conditions and it starts overheating.
Have you dusted it out?
Try one of those cooling pads, maybe the fans aren't powerful enough to do their job.
I've dusted it out with a bigass air compressor. I tried two different cooling pads, plus tupperware with ice. :v:
On newer games the GPU gets up to 105C, so I definitely can't play those. On older games it slows down but rarely goes about 65.

Jesus fucking Christ, 105 degrees CELSIUS?
[editline]15th March 2011[/editline]
That's 221 degrees Fahrenheit. I think you misread whatever told you this.

If the 9x00M GT series is anything like the 8x00M GT series, then that's quite normal.
nVidia weren't exactly lucky with those two series, especially the 8x00M series.

Yeah, it's almost definitely your graphics card overheating. I have a similar one (9600M GS), and I used to have problems with games slideshowing after an hour of play or so. And mine was only going up to 90C.
I fixed mine by cleaning the vents, but you might be looking at a fan being actually broken. Go ahead and try a cooling pad, I guess.

Not really that uncommon for a laptop. My CPU gets around 70celsius while it's idle, so does the AC adapter.
Getting a cooling pad that should arrive tonight, though.
Try searching eBay for a replacement fan. It's obviously not doing it's job correctly if it's above the boiling point of water. When you replace the fan, reapplying the thermal paste with some really good stuff (Arctic Silver?) might help.
While I do agree temperatures are definitely an issue, I don't think that it's causing your games to slow down.
My friend's laptop's GPU (9800m GTS) goes up to ~105 too and even after hours it still plays games with normal framerates
So did games run fine before? Or is this a problem that you've had since purchase?
try different drivers, or googling for others having this issue
also to all the other people saying it is the fan, 100C is common for laptops, yes a cooling pad will help greatly, but most cards are benched to 115C
my laptop at load is only 55c wat is this
What kind of laptop is it? I have a Dell and it had a problem exactly like that...it got to the point where it was turning off when I was just multitasking too much. Apparently it's frequent with this model, sent it back and it's worked fine since.

My 9700M GT also used to get up to that kind of temperature before I replaced the heatsink paste.
(Overclocked 9600M GT)
Cleaning out the cooling fins and swabbing the fan, as well as placing the back rubber feet on the computer up on used printer cartridges also helps too - the latter also even angling the keyboard a bit for easier typing. Hell, I even run my laptop overclocked when it's sitting on used printer cartridges (95% of the time) and it doesn't overheat or make noises as long as I take a screwdriver with some cloth taped on the tip and swab the fan shroud and fan clean of dust and clean out the cooling fins every so often.

Temperatures are probably indirectly slowing his system down, if his GPU is hitting record levels then the system will no doubt drop speed down to keep the gpu safe.
Wow 105 is worrying.

I've seen an MBP go up to 126 on the CPU, that's extreme.

i would make some comment about deleting everything but the words macbook pro and saying "well there's your problem" but i dont feel like fucking with you today
But I'm in a good mood today  All the parts for my HTPC arrived today. 9800 GX2, Xeon 3440, 6tb worth of Spinpoint F4's, 4gb of Ballistix Smart Tracer (:downs:), loadsa fun :awesome:

my mbp's 9600gt regularly hits 90-100C

idles at 60-70C
9600m GT, not all that great to be honest. Like the GTX 480 of heat and the GT 240 of performance :v:

a dual gpu for a home theatre?
I can't run Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines on Windows 7 with a Quad-Core CPU and 4GB of DDR3 RAM.
[editline]17th March 2011[/editline]
And that makes me sad sometimes.
a dual gpu for a home theatre?
$80 on eBay. Better than and cheaper than the 5670 I was originally going to use.
I love how you noticed that and not the quad core hyperthreading server processor or the ram with lights on it.

I did, but I have a Q6600 in my htpc so I'm not really one to talk. (Well the htpc has mutliple purposes (Hosting a few MC and a gmod server)
but I only use a 4350 for it, its hooked up to my tv and monitor, I just don't get why you need it :saddowns:
Because eventually I want to get another and SLI them :smugdog: Plus I'm using this not quite as much as a Home Theater PC and more as a Home Entertainment PC. As in I will be playing games on it.
