is it possible to use steam and all of its services on Ubuntu? I can try wine but will it work and how fast will it be?
Just try it.
It can be a bit slow sometimes, but that can be because of my aging laptop.
Steam is a tad slow, generally when there's a lot of stuff rendering. But it is 100% usable on Wine. I use it.
Usable but laggy and with some small bugs, but the chat works fine and also steam store i think ?!

It should now it uses webkit.
You can even play source games, albeit on lower settings and at a lower FPS.
i installed it with playonlinux you might want to try it !

When I had it on Ubuntu 9.10 it all ran fine on Wine. I haven't had an opportunity to try it on 10.04 but I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't. Good luck.
playonlinux is pretty much a shittier version of winetricks
I've heard that VALVe are working on a GNU/Linux client of Steam.
I can't remember the source on top of my head, but I'll see if I can dig it up again!

I had issues on 9.04 and 9.10 with the Tahoma font. It was extremely glitchy in Steam. That was the only problem I had and it was purely cosmetic.

yeah we have a few topics about that a few pages in. shit's pretty cool
The latest version of wine doesn't work with steam. It really sucks for me because I can't simply install an older version (dependency issues).
I'm sure it is possible, but will require much more effort than I can be bothered to give.
The issue I have is whenever I tell it to run a game or install it the program crashes. It can be gotten around with steam://validate/*game id*
I was playing around with it last night for the first time, using winetricks to install. Copied over my TF2 GCF files and wouldn't install the game, kept complaining about being too fragmented and then not enough drive space.

Or some sort of badge that says "My kernel > Your kernel"
I want a little penguin that sits on top of my head while playing TF2.
Yeah, I think the penguin is the best Idea.
Here's one thing I hope they don't do. They better not make it an Ubuntu logo or something like that. If they do that they associate all that is great about Linux with Ubuntu. (Which is a bad thing IMO).
I will beat up gabe if it ends up being an ubuntu logo
[editline]10:31PM[/editline]
I'll beat you up too because you suggested that it might happen
Chill the fuck out Buttsex... Don't yo start threatening bystanders.

If you even try, I'm gonna tare you an new asshole in the shape of the ubuntu logo.
jokes on you, I've already got one of those
When I used ubuntu, i got CS:S working just fine
except at 50-60 fps rather than 200 - 300 fps.
Do it if you want it to be like this.

Also when steam moves to linux then fuck yea im dropping windows in the water.
About Steam being released on Linux. I hope they don't make it Gnome or KDE dependent. That shit would be horrible. I don't want to get the entire dependencies for Gnome or KDE just to run steam. They also better not touch my configs. Take the Steam starting on boot situation. The only file they can really edit to make it work with any setup would be .xinitrc, They better not touch that shit...

I agree, I dont want to have to change to Gnome or KDE. I like my Openbox the way it is.
I think we should email gabe about this. Just in case it's what they had in mind.

it gets worse, .xinitrc isn't read if you use GDM, XDM, or KDM.
So there's no file they can really change. Since they're all different depending on the WM and DE.
