Realtek Digital Output (optical) missing after installing SPDIF Bracket to mobo
13 replies, posted
OS: Windows 7 64 bit
Mobo: Gigabyte Z97 HD3 (has 2 pin SPDIF header on board)
ASUS SPDIF bracket adapter with both optical and RCA plugged into both SPDIF pins on mobo and a spare +5v pin from unused USB, The red light from the optical port is ON, but in the sound devices there is no Realtek Digital Output (optical) device showing. The only Digital Output showing is the ATAPI Internal ATAPI Jack, there are no SPDIF digital outputs showing.
I have verified with my mobo documentation that the pins are correct from my mobo to the spdif adapter. I have updated the Realtek HD Audio Manager driver.
For the record I am attempting to use an Astro mixamp (gen 2) with my system using optical ( I am aware that I can use just USB to connect the mixamp but would like to get optical working too)
Thank you for taking the time to view this thread and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Try installing the version of the driver that your motherboard came with, the old one.

Done, no change whatsoever. Here's a screenshot of all the audio devices shown.
Thanks for the suggestion though. Let me know if there's any more info/screenshots you need.

Damn, that is strange. For me, it's always appeared right in the audio menu, although it typically appeared as "Digital Audio (optical)" instead of SPDIF. Was the device appearing before you installed the bracket?
Can you explain more what you mean by "a spare +5v pin from unused USB"? I think that your mobo might detect whether or not digital audio is connected by checking if the circuit has been completed, if you're getting power from somewhere else that might bungle it.

I never saw anything related to spdif or digital audio (besides the ATAPI thing shown) prior to the expansion card.
Here's a little diagram of what I did:

have you tried flipping the SPDIF and ground? That diagram doesn't label a pin as "2" so it might be counting from the top.

I'm fairly sure pin labelled 1 is SPDIFO, there's even a 1 printed on the mobo.
Make sure that "disabled devices" are displayed, then force it. Also, make ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that your cables are fully inserted on both sides. It's very easy to have these cables appear to be in but not actually be fully clipped in.
Disabled and disconnected devices are shown, I swapped the pins on the mobo, checked all cables for insertion, nothing. I guess the expansion card could be borked. I just got it in the mail today.

darn dude, that's rough
Can you post a picture of the card as close/detailed as you can of both sides of the PCB?

Yeah, here you go.

Honestly, I don't know how to help. As far as I know, SPDIF should show up even if nothing at all is plugged in, but that might be incorrect (I have an optical out as well as a regular SPDIF connector on my mobo, and they both show up even though the spdif connector isn't connected to anything)
If you have a multimeter, try to get a read off of your +5v.
Also, if you can, try the bracket in another computer.
I'm sorry if my suggestions aren't helping, this really blows because digital audio is a lot of fun. Is there by chance a second spdif out on your mobo that you could try?

Also, how old is that bracket?

The good news is that you're barking up the right tree. Others have done what you have done and it worked.

I can try another +5v pin somewhere else, perhaps, but the red light IS coming from the optical port so it must get power.
My best bet will be trying it in a different computer, although I'll have to do some looking.
There's only one SPDIF out unfortunately.
Bracket is brand new.
Yeah I saw people doing the same kind of thing which is why I thought it should work so easily.
I got it on amazon prime, so I will likely just return it as defective and get another one.
Alternatively if someone could recommend me a cheap cheap sound card with optical out that would be an option too.

From looking at this picture you posted, it doesn't look like you've tried setting "Realtek Digital Output" as the default sound device. If you don't do this, no sound will go through that sound device. I can confirm that it is the right device to use for optical out, because i'm using the exact same breakout board, although with a different motherboard (still Realtek sound chip though) where i only had to plug in the cable.
Try setting it as default with a cable between the breakout board and the mixamp, if that doesn't work i'm stumped. Good work on the bodge.
