Alright,
I need a new GPU and I have some spare money.
What do I use my computer for?
Watching movies, a lot of movies, every day the family cuddles up behind my pc which is connected to a 42" TV.
Playing games, I like it end of story.
Games like: AvP, Starcraft II, Anno, Civilization V, Portal 2(when it's out), FPS, RTS and RPG.
Current Systeem:
Case: Zalman GS1000
CPU :i7 920.
MOBO: Gigabyte UDR3
PSU: Coolermaster silent pro 700 watt
Moniter: 24" 1920x1080 and a 42" tv.
GPU: 8800GTS 640MB
So what should I get and why?
1.
I can get a XFX 6870 Black Edition for 190 euro and a OZC Vertex 3 for 225 euro.
Why the XFX, it's very silent, since it produces 41,8 dB(A) under load and should play games good enough,.
Why the Vertex 3 it's silent and fast.
2.
I can get a Sapphire 6990 for 350 euro.
It should be bloody fast and run all the games, how ever it's like a crying baby as far as I understand.
3.
I can get a Sapphire 6990 for 350 euro and build a custom water cooling kit for it to make it silent.
Should go in PC Building.
Also, movies don't require a huge gfx card. Do you really need a ssd?
Id go for option one because you dont need such a GFX card to play those game good enough, i have a 5770 which runs crysis 2 without problems.
I'd get the 6870 and an SSD.
I run a lot of the games you run on a 5770 with no problems and an SSD is an amazing performance boost.
Alright,
Next
Should I get the XFX 6870 with or without a SSD and should I take a Vertex 2 or 3 or a different one?
I do have a PCIe Sata II controller and 2 PCIe slots.
SSDs are kinda unnecessary in my opinion, but if you got the dosh, go for it
Have you ever used one?

Vertex 3 if you had SATA III but you don't, you could get a PCI-E SATA III controller.
A Vertex 3 yeah
It's great, it's just way too expensive for it to be worth it. :ohdear:
If you think a Vertex 3 is too expensive to be worth it, you'd probably say that getting a blowjob from Zooey Deschanel for 10 bucks would be too expensive to be worth it.

Are you saying a Vertex 3 is worth 30 blowjobs from Zooey Deschanel?
Vertex 3 if you had SATA III but you don't, you could get a PCI-E SATA III controller.
I do have a Rocket 62x RocketRai62x SATA III controller laying around.
Why not save up for a Geforce 590 instead?
Why not save up for a Geforce 590 instead?
6990 is more than he needs for what he's doing.
a 590 would be overkill.

It's around the same price, and I prefer the 590 better than the 6990 better as a more practicle card because of CUDA for GPU acceleration, which is pretty handy especially for those that works with video conversion and HD playback frequently. Not to mention that you get PhysX as a bonus
I'm also quite sure that the 590 will perform better later on down the road with more driver optimizations.
I said Sapphire 6990 since I can get it for 350 here which is 150 euro more than the XFX 6870
If you play Civ 5 alot, get an Nvidia card. It favors them hugely.

Go for the 6990 in that case

A 6990..... only 350€? How's that possible?
I said Sapphire 6990 since I can get it for 350 here which is 150 euro more than the XFX 6870
That's even cheaper than the 6970 is here :v:
Where are you getting a 6990 for so little?
Get the 6870 and the SSD.
6870 is more than enough to run those games and any game in the next few years, spending money on a flagship card isn't the best bang:buck ratio unless you need the performance.
Also ask yourself if you really need the SSD too, it'll definitely increase productivity and with around 120gb to work with, a fair few games/programs too. But do you really find yourself in the position of wanting faster load times? I've had a 10,000rpm hard drive for a fair few years now and I've never noticed myself wanting faster, I multi-task often so if a game is dragging along (which is rare) I just alt-tab and let it finish up.
Keep in mind an SSD won't improve your movie watching at all.
And a 6990 is very much overkill, get a mid-range card now that can play everything and a better mid-range card in a couple/few years time, it's the best way to go.

that's not why you get an SSD

Actually 6990 and 590 have a very little performance gap. In fact, the 6990 beats the 590 sometimes.
350 Euros = $479 AUD.
HD 6990 in AUS = $799 for cheapest.
What the fuck.

Make that most of the time.
