Firefox OS (also referred to by its codename "Boot to Gecko" or "B2G") is Mozilla's open source mobile operating system based on Linux and Mozilla's Gecko technology. Firefox OS is a mobile operating system that's free from proprietary technology while still a powerful platform that provides application developers an opportunity to create excellent products. In addition, it's flexible and capable enough to make the end user happy. The Web is the platform Backed by some of the biggest names in the industry, Firefox OS is an open platform that fosters greater participation in the value chain. Made of the Web Built entirely using HTML5 and other open Web standards, Firefox OS is free from the rules and restrictions of existing proprietary platforms. Made by Firefox For the past 15 years, Mozilla has been instrumental in innovating and shaping the Web to keep it open and accessible to all. As a result of their efforts, one fifth of all Web activity today happens through Firefox products. I've been considering FF OS for a while now, it runs so much smoother than Android on a fraction of the hardware. I'll probably splurge on a Keon as a dev device to see how it is.
Why are web browsers getting their own OSes now? Chrome has its own OS too.
Why are web browsers getting their own OSes now? Chrome has its own OS too.
Because the web is the ultimate cross-platform...platform?
On the Nexus S, it definitely runs faster than Android 4.1/4.2.
I'm gonna do a Nandroid backup and install it on my Nexus S, see how it goes.
Can you install Chrome on it?
[t]http://i.cubeupload.com/keEP2O.jpg[/t] Well, Lagdroid can go and fuck its self, this is really damn smooth. It has the odd brainfart, but its doing it far less often than Android did.
How is it usability wise?
How is it usability wise?
I really dislike how the back button is in the top left of every app, the physical back button on the phone does nothing. All of the stock apps are understandably limited as far as functionality goes, some apps are not scaling themselves according to my displays DPI too. The UI is fine though, I really quite like it and with a bit of work it could be an awesome OS. [editline]30th June 2013[/editline] I had to un-install it though, the SMS app wouldn't actually allow me to view a message thread the button just did nothing.
Madrid, 1 July 2013 - Telefónica, Mozilla and ZTE today announced the world’s first commercial launch of Firefox OS with the ZTE Open available at Movistar stores from 2 July priced at €69 (inc. VAT), including €30 for prepaid customers and the option of zero interest financing for post pay customers*. The launch marks a significant moment for the mobile phone industry with consumers able for the first time to buy a smartphone based entirely on open web standards. Firefox OS frees consumers and developers from the constraints of existing closed ecosystems by using the web as the platform for all functionality and applications. Commenting on the launch, Luis Miguel Gilpérez, CEO of Telefónica España, said, “We believe that smartphones need to be more open and that the web is the platform for making this possible. Consumers should not be locked to any one system but have the choice to consume the content they want and the flexibility to be able to take it with them when they change devices. This first open web device marks a significant milestone in making this possible. This is just the beginning as we plan to bring a wide range of Firefox OS devices to our customers.” The ZTE Open offers customers a smartphone experience at an incredible price point, making it ideal for cost conscious consumers or those looking to upgrade to a smartphone for the first time. The experience will be further enhanced as new features and capabilities are added via over the air updates. Firefox OS features a revolutionary new search capability that allows the device to adapt to the user’s changing needs and is only built into Firefox OS. Swipe to the right from the home screen and enter a search term and the phone will customize itself to that search. For example, search for an artist and get results to buy songs, watch music videos, buy concert tickets and even listen to them instantly without having to download and install any apps. “The launch of Firefox OS marks an incredibly exciting time for the mobile industry. Firefox OS powers the first smartphones built entirely on Web technologies and will stimulate an inspiring new wave of innovation for the Web,” says Jay Sullivan, Mozilla Chief Operating Officer. It looks pretty good but I'm afraid it will go the way of webOS.
It looks pretty good but I'm afraid it will go the way of webOS.

Just wandering but why is that a bad thing. All I hear is that HTML 5 is flexible and efficient, but I don't really even know that. Unless you mean an Internet/Facebooky centric OS, like Chrome OS.
Never mind, just looked it up. So it is based of a Linux kernal, and comes with the intrinsic bloat?
Never mind, just looked it up. So it is based of a Linux kernal, and comes with the intrinsic bloat?
What kind of bloat are you talking about?
What kind of bloat are you talking about?
I take it back tbh. I don't actually know much. I had recent experience with Ubuntu and Unity and it left a bad taste in my mouth.
I take it back tbh. I don't actually know much. I had recent experience with Ubuntu and Unity and it left a bad taste in my mouth.
Unity (especially in Ubuntu pre 13.04) is probably the most bloated User Interfaces available for Linux at the moment, I'm running KDE (which is historically not lightweight and it's running smoothly). I'll probably switch a Firefox phone once my ZTE blade finally gives up and they're available here.
I take it back tbh. I don't actually know much. I had recent experience with Ubuntu and Unity and it left a bad taste in my mouth.
Linux is pretty damn bloat free out of the box, for embedded devices (phone, tablets) the OS is as minimal as it can possibly be. Hell, I've seen Linux run on a micro-controller before!
I remember messing around with the first emulator a while ago and it was already amazingly smooth I really hope this doesn't die
Never mind, just looked it up. So it is based of a Linux kernal, and comes with the intrinsic bloat?
how does one confuse wandering for wondering
Does it have Bluetooth modem emulation?
I'm kind of tempted to make my next phone a Firefox OS one, I don't know whether to wait for a end-user device or to just splurge now and get a Peak. Also if I do I'll do my best to make a Facepunch app.

[editline]7th July 2013[/editline] also consumer devices aren't coming to the UK until 2014
I think its a brilliant idea. The concept is exciting and I think the development platform on it is imensly powerful and look forward to seeing what it brings to the table. I certainly has its place to kick the living crap out of WP7 imo.Another good thing is that it runs entirely off of HTML5 so its light and quick. Might be wrong but I would pick a Firefox OS phone over a WP7/8 (whatever it is now) phone any day.
I'd love to try this out but it seems to be one thing or another in the world of android, no such thing as dual-booting.

Why must we get everything last :(
