So guys I have a budget of 800€ and have to get the best possible 17inch laptop for my mom.
She only does light work with it (web, email, printing, scanning), but it must last at least 5 years so I need something with decent specs.
One thing I'm torn about is the screen because of slight eyesight issues: is 1600x900 (most 17 inch have this) better at this resolution or do I need 1920x1080? (I heard win10 scaling is good so FHD shouldn't be too bad).
I have seen these ones for now:
- LENOVO 799€ Looks good overall http://www.eprice.it/portatili-LENOVO/d-6559876
- ACER 799€ Much more powerful CPU but last gen. Also if it heats more maybe it lasts less.. http://www.eprice.it/portatili-ACER/d-5786743
- ASUS 740€ Newest generation components (940m instead of 840m) but sadly only 1600x900 http://www.amazon.it/Asus-X751LB-TY022H-Notebook-Processore-i7-5200U/dp/B00XBOU51Q/
- HP 729€ Looks kinda good, overkill ram tho http://www.amazon.it/HP-17-k206nl-Notebook-Processore-Naturale/dp/B00T80IRZ8/
Which one of these is the best? I'm open to suggestions for better alternatives.
If someone can find me a laptop that has a broadwell cpu, nvidia gtx900 series gpu and FHD screen under 800€ I'll get that one for sure.
I think the acer is worth the extra 50€.
The cpu is more than twice as fast, so it should last much longer if it's only used for light programs that don't overheat the pc too much.
I would have liked the newer gen components but are they worth giving up so much performance?
I would have gone with the asus. I have had both asus and acer laptops, and when it comes to building quality, asus always seem to be better than acer. (From my own experience, don't take it as a fact.)
Then again, your mum probably don't need a laptop with a dedicated graphics card? I'm pretty sure you could get something cheaper that works just as well for the tasks you listed.
The Acer VN7 is a very simple and easy laptop to maintain that's fairly acceptably built, though. Aside from the keyboards, newer Acers are generally on-par with Asus build quality while not being absolutely impossible to disassemble for routine cleaning or upgrades.
My SO has a newer VN7 with a 960M and the only thing negative he has to say about it is that the matte black is a fingerprint magnet. Sure, it might not be a Macbook in terms of build quality, but it's more than acceptable and doesn't have any glaring design flaws while having a great screen and performance.
I ordered the Acer.
Mainly for the better screen: The higher pixel density should make text look sharper with windows 10's improved scaling, which should help a bit. Also it has an IPS panel which is more pleasant to look at.
I only hope that it doesn't run too hot and that the performance doesn't degrade too much over time.
