• Bitdefender free version and annoying windows
    41 replies, posted
I got a new computer a few weeks back and only the other day I remembered I hadn't put any anti-virus software on it  woops. A quick search told me the Bitdefender was one of the best anti-virus programs out there so I went ahead and downloaded that. The problem however is that every 30 minutes or so it has a window pop up. The popup isn't trying to sell me anything or encourage me to upgrade to the paid version, all it does is sit there tell me everything is functioning correctly. It's annoying and i can't find an option (or any option for that matter) to disable this notification. Furthermore there isn't a button to close this notification, I have to wait for it to do that itself. Anyone got any clue how to top this? If not, what does FP recommend in lieu of Bitdefender? This will quickly get on my nerves if I leave it there.
Avast is good free alternative once you set up exclusions.
I've started using Avast exclusively and it's prettyy nice. I hate how every installation nowadays comes with an offer for some shitty virus scanner or toolshitbar.
I normally just grab free one-year subscriptions that AV companies give out every so often. Got a free year of AVG (It's a trial version but lasts for a whole year). so using that. Seems to work alright . Just make sure to uncheck the unnecessary crap when you install it (Toolbar/extensions etc.)
Avira is better than Avast and AVG is just shit.
Avira is better than Avast and AVG is just shit.
Meh. I haven't been infected by malware for years anyhow. I thought AVG used the BitDefender engine.
you typically can't get viruses unless you make silly clicks, so I disabled windows defender and got rid of all other AVs. can't do much unless you click "Run" anyway, you'll basically only run into adware from accidentally installing that toolbar when downloading freeware should you actually install an AV, turn off real-time protection

please change my view

Driveby downloads, infected Java or flash objects, unpatched system/browser/whatever exploits, shady shit injected into websites you normally wouldn't think would give you a virus. Even if you say that you've never gotten a virus, how would you know? If you've never had any AVs installed, it's not like you can always tell just by using your machine normally. There's some pretty sneaky shit out there. You can use common sense as an initial method of protection. But never, ever rely on it as your sole protection.

Meh. I haven't been infected by malware for years anyhow. I thought AVG used the BitDefender engine.
AVG generally has below average detection rates and above average false positives.
Please
what if I just turn on peerblock? that should block most of the stuff that doesn't appear in "uninstall or change a program" from affecting my internet connection, the rest should be fine as i've never been affected by something absurd like file theft
Install Avast and Malware Bytes. Let's see how much fucking crap appears.
nothing

even though that's how I think, chrome prevents downloads form all sites without your authorization anyway, the only way to permanently trust a site is by clicking its favicon
chrome prevents downloads form all sites without your authorization anyway
Most, not all. If you're using Windows which I'm going to assume you are, there are exploits which will make the browser download files and run them without authorization. Google's done a good job of blocking most but I know and have experienced some of these others that forcefully fed a virus onto my system and tried to run it, luckily comodo stopped it.
err, I meant all sites, but not all files from them, I'm aware i'll, uh, reconsider
ehh, i've used AVG for years. never had a single issue that it never caught.
that you know of
that you know of
obviously, if i had some sort of virus or anything I would be having system issues/stability issues. and this is coming from a guy who uses common sense, and is too smart to get any sort of virus/infection
Viruses don't always cause system and stability issues, there are some quite sneaky ones out there like I said previously. AVG is kinda crappy now (it used to be pretty good), if you insist having that thing on your system, at least run a virus scan with Malwarebytes to pick up anything AVG might've missed every week or so.
obviously, if i had some sort of virus or anything I would be having system issues/stability issues. and this is coming from a guy who uses common sense, and is too smart to get any sort of virus/infection
The only viruses that cause issues with stability are viruses programmed by idiots. If you have a virus made by any halfway decent programmer you'd have no idea it was on your system.
So Avast or Avira?
I just use windows security essentials, the one that comes built in for w8. Used that for years with w7, with no problems
I just use windows security essentials, the one that comes built in for w8. Used that for years with w7, with no problems
You know that even MS tells you to use something else, right?
I want my AV to have built in malware or it isn't good enough to use [editline]15th January 2015[/editline]
you typically can't get viruses unless you make silly clicks, so I disabled windows defender and got rid of all other AVs. can't do much unless you click "Run" anyway, you'll basically only run into adware from accidentally installing that toolbar when downloading freeware should you actually install an AV, turn off real-time protection

that you know of
the fucking irony holy hell how can you be this oblivious [editline]15th January 2015[/editline] I bet you have malware so bad that it's installed into your BIOS
I want my AV to have built in malware or it isn't good enough to use
So you use ZoneAlarm?
I use Avast but you do need to invest time in configuring it so you don't get annoying and noisy popup alerts. Pretty much every free program that is at all popular includes useless 'offers' these days, so that's not too surprising to see. Just pay attention during the install and uncheck all the crap you don't want.
So you use ZoneAlarm?
if my computer doesn't bluescreen and my identity isn't stolen by china-men I'm not happy.
That's the one advantage of MSE. It doesn't bother you for shit. Unfortunately that means viruses too.
I just use windows security essentials, the one that comes built in for w8. Used that for years with w7, with no problems
used to be one of the best a few years ago though recently it has fallen behind.

At times it can be a bit of a hassle but the protection it offers is significant.
