I'm switching my ATI Radeon HD 5770 for the Nvidia GTX 570 Fermi.
How should I go about removing the old drivers and putting in the new ones? Any specific order?

I think there is a program called C cleaner that removes old drivers, not too positive though. Easiest way is to just un install the old ones though.
I don't even think you have to remove the old drivers... but you should be able to remove catalyst drivers via Add/Remove Programs in the control panel also...
Do graphics cards not run without drivers? I thought they could still function, just not optimally.

There are default Windows drivers which are locked to 1280x1024, I think.

no hardware acceleration at all.
what's the fucking point of a 570 which can't render a single triangle.
My point was; What's the dilemma here if you could just uninstall the old drivers, put the new card in, then install the new ones without any problems whatsoever?

Maybe I'm not understanding the question properly, as far as I know it's pretty much as straight forward as that.

I'm asking for a recommendation on a program or method to uninstall the old ones.
You can uninstall nvidia drivers through the uninstall programs dialogue. I assume it's the same for ATI.
I'm inexperienced with ATI drivers, but I hear they're pretty bad about being updated/removed. Is there something about them that complicates it beyond "Add/Remove Programs -> Uninstall Catalyst Control Center"?

I've always done it like that and haven't had any problems. Updating drivers has always worked really well too, you don't even need to reboot if you're on Windows 7, it switches the drivers on the fly. Which is way better than how updating drivers worked when I was still using nVidia, but that might have changed by now.
I can install my nvidia drivers without a reboot. So I guess it has changed.

I personally would just remove the old drivers via device manager, install the new card and make sure that it is in working order, then install the new drivers.
