I have a test tomorrow and I am wondering how to solve the following 4.5 * 10^5 * 3,7 * 10^3 _______________________ 5 * 6 * 10^2 * 2,3 *10^4 I think it has to be a exponential notation and ^10 My answer: 4,5 * 3,7 * 10^5 +3 = 16,65 * 10^8 __________________________________ 5 * 6 * 2,3 * 10^2 + 4 = 69 * 10^6 I hope you can help me. [editline]07:21PM[/editline] Also i'm dutch so I don't know how to translate most of the things. [editline]07:22PM[/editline] Please only respond if you can help me.

Well in dutch it says it has to be calculated in "Machten van 10" That is a crucial part and I have no idea how to translate it.

[IMG]http://www.mileanhour.com/files/2010/8/Fulloffuck.jpg[/IMG] Sorry, what I just said there was wrong. Multiplying them wouldn't work, forget what I said.
It means as a power of 10, so 10^2, 10^3 etc.
That!
Hey OP, take a look at my answer
My teacher said that you could just calculate it but then it would be wrong. [editline]07:30PM[/editline] I'm sorry FreeThinker but that is wrong.
Try this: 1665 * 10^6 __________________________________ 69 * 10^6 And then it would come back to the answer I posted. What does your teacher want exactly?
Wait, let me get my information book. [editline]07:44PM[/editline] "When multiplying numbers with powers, you have to add or deduct the powers. Example: - 7 * 10^3 * 10^4 = 14 * 10(3+4) = 14 * 107 - 7 * 10^5 * 10-^2 = 14* 10(5-2) = 14 * 10^3" Translated as good as I could.
4.5 * 3,7 * 10^(3+5) _______________________ 5 * 6 * 2,3 *10^(4+2)
Sorry, but what is wrong with (4.5 * (10^5) * 3,7 * (10^3)) _______________________ (5 * 6 * (10^2) * 2,3 *(10^4)) ? [editline]08:17PM[/editline] Which would equal 21.4492754 according to my TI-83

[QUOTE=FreeThinker;24807755]or 1665 ____ 69 as I've mentally calculated in the 4th post (probably missed something due to attention problems)[/QUOTE] Ah, I see. Now, out of pure interest, why is that wrong?
[QUOTE=Codename 47;24808204]Ah, I see. Now, out of pure interest, why is that wrong?[/QUOTE] Well I don't know about his school, but our school punishes us for being smart and we are not allowed to do problems in our head or on a calculator and we have to work it out.
Thanks, test went great.
Post a picture of your score
I don't have it yet. I will when I get it back. [editline]06:29PM[/editline] To make this clear, I FEEL like the test went great.
7.2/10. Thanks guys.
