• Help choosing a bike?

So gas has become expensive ($4 a gallon) and I'm working closer to home this summer and I decided that I need a bike. A good one. Well, not too good. Just one that will get me around town and maybe for bike rides. My price range is pretty flexible. Just nothing over $400. Some tips on what to look for and what not to look for would be extremely helpful.
Get a bicycle.
If you are only going to need to go on roads and light off-roading you should get a road bike. Get a fixed wheel bike if you are looking for something cheap and don't have any hills near you, or a geared road bike if you have hills or prefer using gears. I have a 2010 Giant Defy 4, it's a great bike for the price and allows me to comfortably travel at 20-30mph, or 40+ on an incline. Put a V8 on your bicycle

There are some hills, and I was told fixed gears are good for citys, downtown type of stuff.
Somehow I read that you want a motorbike :v:. Definitely get bike with gears, you'll get up hills and slopes without any problems. I own a mountain bike though, because I like to go offroad
Get a hybrid bicycle, they work great on all surfaces. Look Here Maybe, to get an idea.
I currently have a cannondale and am loving it.
If you're not using it for racing and you care the least bit about comfort I would go for a hybrid. Always go for something with gears and not a hipster fixed gear bike unless you're not planning on actually using it for transportation and just want it for fun. I currently have a Fuji Newest 2.0 as the bike I use the most just because it's so much fun to ride but in reality the most usable bike was my Trek 7000 something hybrid. To save money you could try buying a used bike. Look online (google) guides on what to look for on used bikes to make sure you're not getting a horrible deal. But really. Road bikes are expensive, much less comfortable for normal transportation, and the nicer/more expensive it looks/is the more other people will likely want to steal it.
Get the cheapest one you can find like me, I bought mine for 10 euro, it's still working even though it makes a lot of noise and my friends call it the "ball cruncher".
I wouldn't get a hybrid, they are far slower than road bikes and don't have the off-road capability of a mountain bike. I never need to go off-road because of how fast I go, even if I took short-cuts with a mountain bike I would get there quicker on my road bike. Besides unless it is extremely muddy I can go off-road on my bike fine, just have to avoid larger bumps/potholes.
