Quake 4 is really great in my opinion, I think the more militaristic take gives it a nice touch. Gameplay is really satisfying.
Pretty good game honestly. Though it requires some tweaking to run properly on modern systems.

*the shit
The singleplayer is underwhelming in comparison to 1 and 2, but the multiplayer is a faster paced version of quake 3, adding in a slide mechanic and just generally faster movement. It's personally not my cup of tea compared to something like CPMA, but if youve played Quake champions and like Slash's movement, you would probably really like Quake 4.
quake 4 singleplayer is alright but the multiplayer is shit

Watch the Quakecon 2v2 2006 finals and tell me again that the multiplayer for this game is shit.

That's exactly my point. Q3A is superior in every way.

Q3A is slow and movement is gimped as shit just because Carmack doesnt want depth to the movement system, 100 damage rail is stupid broken and causes every match to be awful angle holding, and both plasma gun and shotgun are basically worthless.
This does not make Quake 4 or 3 better than one another, but allows people to have choice in the game they wish to play. Quake 3 does not have as much depth in movement or mechanics as 4, but it is more approachable, which is very much why iD branched Quake 3 to make Live (which at least solved the *awful* 100 damage rail).
As I've stated before, I personally heavily prefer Challenge ProMode Arena, but your statement that Q3A is superior in every way is absolutely asinine.

I should probably have stated that I think Q3A is superior in every way in a competitive setting. There's a reason why Q3A/CPMA has more tournaments than Q4 nowadays. But yeah, just take anything I say with a grain of salt, it's just my opinion, just like you have yours.

Do people actually play Q3A/OSP anymore? I was under the impression that both the Q4 *and* OSP communities were killed by the Quake Live release. CPMA isn't quite dead, but it never had a release like Quake Live to kill it. Reflex could have killed it but the dev's for it are insane.
Personally I prefer QL just because I'm more familiar with it. I still remember when Q4's MP was first revealed and the Q3 community was shitting on it for trying to be another Q3A, even if Q4's mechanics were arguably better.

This is every quake, check old usenet and forum threads for Quake 2 and 3 and you will see the same shit. Comes with the franchise

I know, just saying from a personal experience type of thing. I was one of the people back then who blindly hated Q4 without even playing it.
These days I just play wherever the players are at. AFPSes are already thinning out as it is. Probably why I'm playing QC.

Unless something happened recently I thought Reflex was going on smoothly.

It's very much the 'change for the sake of change' attitude. Plasma gun has absurd knock back that breaks alot of maps because plasma climbing is too easy with no punishment. Rocket knock back has changed a few times with no justification. It's been a while since I've checked in on the game, but it has died quite a bit in the last few months, although I'm not sure what the cause is.

The cause is also possibly just quake champions, but I'm not too ready to accept a game with such a heavy traditional duel focus dieing to a game that doesn't have traditional duel
