Any downsides with using a server OS for personal use?

For the past few year or so I've been using windows 7 and it's slow imo and I dont use any of the features :crossarms:
I dont want to use XP because of how old it is so I just recently bought windows server 2008 and I'm planning to install that but are there any problems with using it on my computer?
Not really. It will take a bit more configuration to get it running as efficiently, and it will have some things you wouldn't see on a user OS that will take some getting used to, like being prompted for a reason when shutting down.
Of course, you won't really get any speed advantage from it. Using Server 2008 will give you essentially the same performance as Vista. You might actually get better performance from 7.
I see you trollin, i hatin

I use server 2003 as a desktop operating system. it's pretty much exactly the same as XP but a little stripped down.
How is it slow?
Some programs will complain if you try to run a non-business version of their program on a server OS.

I've heard this, but I haven't had the problem yet.
i'm just looking for something a bit... faster :frown:
is there any way to make w7 not be so slow
get a better fucking computer.
my 7 is fast as lighning (Q6600@ 3.2, GTX 460, 4 GB DDR2, average computer by today's standards)
Go with a custom mainframe OS. It's like an operating system but without the user interface! And it's totally efficient! And how!

amd phenom x4 9850+, radeon hd 5870, 4gb ddr2...
Just disable a pile of shit with msconfig.
If that doesn't work: if you don't use your computer for gaming much, just install linux.
just install linux.
Hey! That's supposed to be MY line!
install gentoo
Get a better processor.
I think this is a troll, but you won't gain anything because unlike Windows Server 2003 vs XP, Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 both share most of their code. Whereas 2003 was an upgraded version of XP (v5.2 versus 5.1 for XP)
OP has a shitty computer.
a REALLY shitty computer.
Win2k3/2k8 serv is pretty good and lightweight, but different.
dual-boot linux
No downsides; you shouldn't see anything being sluggish with your build though.

Average? Please.
q6600 is pretty average but at 3.2 GHz it's pretty beast. and with that 460 it's a nice one.
Lots of disadvantages, but mainly based on compatibility. Lots of software would say "hurr you have a server OS, that means this app will not be supported" before it even tries to install, and refuse to continue. Plus, configuring a server OS for the first time and make it suitable for personal usages is a massive pain in the ass.
It might even be worse considering it's based on Vista and not 7.
Windows Server 2008 R2
If the OP wants a slim, efficient OS, he should rebuild a Windows disc with nLite or vLite.

I got it working perfectly and it was extremely fast but just put windows 7 back on when a load of things refused to install.

Same, could not get Zune, MSE working etc, also simple things like some games, and a Seagate disk clone tool.
I think you just have a slow ass harddrive. By what means is win7 slow?
