How big of an improvement to performance would this processor be?

Phenom II x4 955

Running games, loading programs, ect
Current specs
Athlon II x4 620
XFX 4890
4GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM
32GB OCZ Vertex SSD - windows boot
1TB HDD - storage & Ubuntu
650W PSU
ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO mobo
Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit
not worth the price if you've already got a quad
No speed difference then? I feel like my processor is a small bottleneck.
there is a speed difference but I'm a frugal bastard. if you feel that 10 frames is worth $150 you can go for it

what games do you play anyway? if you're playing like left 4 dead then overclocking will make more of a difference than totally upgrading (l4d is ridiculously sensitive to clock speed) but if you're playing a lot of Far Cry or something an upgrade may be worth it
yeah go for it, the 955 is a much better architecture
Wait a second OP, how much RAM do you have?
IMO not worth it, wait for Bulldozer.
It's actually a fairly large jump.

Just replace the i5 750 with the 955 since they're roughly the same.
OP, I'd say go for it. I can personally vouch for the 955 being a very good processor.
8 frames isn't that big a difference

what? why would you get a 955 over an i5 750?

Hah, sorry. I knew I was missing something. 4GB DDR3 running at 1600MHz
If you notice in that Techspot comparison, the difference is big(50% increase) ONLY at very low resolution, when other factors such as videocard don't matter.
Once you get up to Far Cry 2 1920x1200(typical of new games in resolution and all around system demands), you see the difference shrinks to 62fps to 71fps(X4 vs i5 750). That's only about 15% increase, for you math impaired people.
So take that into account when figuring out if it's worth it or not.

that's exactly why they benchmark at low resolutions, the graphics card is simply a bottleneck
[editline]09:09PM[/editline]
it's also why that review is a massive failure. They should be running SLI 480s
that's exactly why they benchmark at low resolutions, the graphics card is simply a bottleneck
I know why they do it, that's not the point. The point is that it's only a theoretical large speed difference in abnormal gaming conditions.
Let's face it, not many people buy quad cores so they can game at 1024x768.
In a typical quad core gaming situation, the difference is small. Unless you think a 15% increase is worth spending what it costs to buy a new CPU.
no no no, that's exactly why I said it's a GPU bottleneck. They're using a 285. The i5 750 and 955 are miles ahead of the 285 in terms of speed relative to each other. If they were using SLI 480s or something there would be a MUCH larger difference in framerates between the CPUs
[editline]09:17PM[/editline]
whether anyone realizes it or not, CPU technology is moving a hell of a lot faster than GPU technology
Also notice that he has an AMD board. :frog:
He said replacement proc, not the whole mobo.
Also overclock the shit out of that 955, they do it well.
sorry, your wording was fucking terrible and the OP is talking about buying a 955 so it seemed like you were telling him to get rid of his i5 for a 955 or something.
And no, the 955 and i5 750 are not even on the same level at all.
Although if he already has an AM3 motherboard then there's no point in getting the i5. Why was it even mentioned? It just confused the matter

OP would be better off getting a new GPU rather than CPU

Buttsex, idk if your stupid or something, but i registered on this site just so i can tell you that he didn't say he ONLY games... Are you really saying an Athlon quad core is only 10 frames short of a phenom quad core? the phenom would give him a pretty noticeable boost in CPU based games with that L3 cache. Windows alone would run faster, and especially programs.

Not enough for that price. OP, wait for bulldozer and then either get that X4 for really cheap or get a new bulldozer CPU.

running games, loading programs, etc. to me means "I'm going to play games and I want programs such as Firefox to load quicker" and l3 cache doesn't do shit to programs like Firefox
If he had any less I'd say upgrade, but it's simply not worth the cost. I don't know about you but I work for my money and I would never blow that much on such a small upgrade.

The 4890 is still a decent card.. I think he should just wait some time, maybe 6 months and then upgrade.
