I've done work on servers and webpage design, but I've never actually payed for or registered a site for hosting. I'm planning on registering my first and last name and using it as a place to put my resume/portfolio/etc. but I hear a lot of people complain about using company X or Y.
Anyone have any recommendations?
Domain.com works pretty well for me.
I hear a lot of good things about http://www.namecheap.com/
I host mine with www.hostgator.com and www.godaddy.com. Never had a problem with either.
I use name.com
I have 3 domains with Reg123 and I manage 35+ domains registered through UK-Cheapest.
Not had a single issue with either, Though to clarify are you looking for hosting or literally just a domain name to point to existing hosting?
namecheap

Dear god no.
They're filling my gmail inbox with 13 messages every day, the UI on their website is clumsy and their CEO is an ass.
The only reason I'd go with them (again) is the 2$ .info domains.
I'm fine with godaddy. Their emails are annoying when your domain is about to expire but I get all of my domains for $1 there (I only buy when they have deals). IMO it's worth it.

Thats the only reason i have godaddy hahah.
I use godaddy and I realize its pretty rubbish but had no issues with it yet.
I use namecheap and I only get emails when shit's about to expire.
Okay well I have to wait 8 days for the registration of my name to expire, I may put a backorder depending on if I have some spare cash to throw around.
Now I'm just contemplating whether to get my username with a .com or .info address; it is just an 8 dollar price difference but .com is just sexy.
name.com (my favorite), namecheap.com, internet.bs

.com
Found a coupon for namecheap and I registered bonzai11.com for $9.10 a year.
Thanks for all of the recommendations.

This is pretty good.

I haven't used it myself but my friends vouch for it. Low prices and No Bullshit™ are what I can make of it.
Godaddy.com for .info, domain.com for everything else (because they sponsor Hak5)
You can register your domains through XnYnZ.com .
It offers the domain registration service at cheap price.
