What's the purpose? Last time I checked the average hard drive space is above 100GB. Why is it still used today?

He's talking about in things like video, pictures and so on. As in, why do people still use .jpeg when we all have enough storage space to handle .pngs.

In a 48 hour film contest I don't have 6 hours to upload that video. I have 2.

Uploading and downloading larger images can still be time (and bandwidth) consuming.
Also I feel like a douche whenever I upload a big PNG image to a page on here because of how it slows down loading the page.
artefacts = side effects of compression
compression = squishing the file by eliminating repetition and/or lowing the bitrate/colour depth
I screwed up the title.

Saving a jpeg at max quality settings in photoshop looks just as good as a png, and still has a smaller file size.

I've found that saving as a jpeg tends to ruin small text in images for whatever reason.
because it's annoying having to wait for large PNGs on a page to load.
And not all of us have ADSL2 connections or anything better than that.

Was that supposed to be an archaeology joke?
If so I got you man, don't worry
Because not everything needs to be in super hi-res crystal clear fucking HD, that's why. There's nothing wrong with using jpeg for most of the stuff we upload.
