Hey guys. I'm building computers for two of my friends, and they sent me a list to go over for them. I just want a second opinion on the parts to see if there's anything that can be improved.
They want to stay at or below the current price, and they're only using these for gaming.

I would get something like an MSI or Gigabyte motherboard rather than ASUS.
I'd also get a Seagate ST1000DM003 over the caviar as it's a better performing drive.

Thanks for the suggestions. I updated the parts list to include the new HDD, and also replaced the GFX Card based on a suggestion someone else gave me.
Do you have any specific Motherboards that would work for around the same price?

I built a machine based on a similar board to the second link and it was nice.
A bit cheaper than your build, all I did was make a couple minor adjustments for better models/brands, and threw in a much better quality PSU.

Shoot, you have rebates turned on in PCpartpicker. Yours was 1042.17 without rebates.

Also no CPU cooler?
Shit didn't notice that. Probably gonna need to talk to my friends about downgrading some parts. What would you suggest changing to bring this down to a 800-900 dollar price range?
Also they don't plan on overclocking, so I didn't think a CPU cooler would be necessary. Forgot to switch to a non-overclocking CPU
Drop it to an H97 board and a 4690.

Intel OEM coolers are shit, even if you aren't overclocking. I'd recommend at minimum a Zalman CNPS5X.
I'm torn on that one. The i5 coolers with the copper are perfectly capable for stock clocks, but with an r9 290 in there it will get toasty.

They are capable and they will keep it running fine but still have a pretty good bit higher temps all around than even a cheap $20-30 cooler, but I always like to get an aftermarket cooler even if I am not overclocking just to try to keep overall system temps a little lower.

That tiny copper slug pressed into the bottom of the aluminum doesn't do shit for temps. It doesn't matter how well the copper slug moves heat if the tiny aluminum fins and extremely inefficient non-shrouded fan can't remove said heat.

Except they aren't capable. If the OEM cooler was capable, it wouldn't let the CPU creep up to near thermal junction under load and go way past the thermal junction under peak loads and cause the CPU to start throttling.
Then you have the noise. Since the cooler can't adequately cool the CPU, the fan will always be running at much higher RPMs and create tons of noise. At peak RPM, they sound like delta fans which is so irritating that you try anything to make it stop.
I built an i5-4430 rig, and even with removing the junk grey paste and putting real stuff on there, it still overheated under load.
I know you're in Texas man, but I'm just saying out of the dozens of i5 systems I've built with the stock cooler, none of them were hitting tj under load.
Stock cooler is actually surprisingly fine on my i5-4670K.
In my previous 2 PC's ive always had aftermarket coolers due to heat and sound issue's.
But this stock 1150 cooler is actually pretty nice.
Even under heavy load its still very silent and I havnt seen it above 65C yet, even when running Planetside 2. With a tiny (0.2Ghz) Oc.
Of course I will be buying a new cooler when it gets old enough that it needs OC'ing to stay relevant. But for now its fine.
