After Christmas I hope to have some money to finally put together a decent gaming computer. I am currently using a Gateway GM5260 (Specs). It is decent for older games like Counter Strike:Source, but it has a bit of trouble on newer games like Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead even on the lowest settings. I am not looking for a top of the line machine, just something the that is a fairly big improvement over what I have now.
This is what I've come up with so far:
AMD Phenom II X2 545 Callisto 3.0GHz 2 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 80W Dual-Core Processor
ASUS M4A79XTD EVO AM3 AMD 790X ATX AMD Motherboard
SAPPHIRE 100277HDMI Radeon HD 4770 512MB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card
Kingston 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 333 (PC 2700) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model KVR333X64C25K2/2G (x2)
Sony Optiarc Black 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA DVD/CD Rewritable Drive
Antec Sonata III 500 Black 0.8mm cold rolled steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 500W Power Supply
All that adds up to $577.94, so there is room for improvement.
This is my first time building a PC so if I am making any glaring mistakes please let me know.
Also, what is the legality of purchasing an OEM version of Windows for home use?
This site makes it sound kind of unclear.
Thank for any help you can give me.
You could get an ATi 4670 and put it in your current rig, which would take care of TF2, CSS and L4D. Another idea is to get a new power supply, then put a 4870/5770 in your current rig, which would be far more than enough for your games.
I say this because the integrated graphics are the only thing stopping you from playing the games you mentioned, which means getting a whole new PC is a bit unnecessary.

I originally just wanted to get a new video card, but like you kind of pointed out I'm pretty limited by a 300 watt power supply. All of the 4670s I saw on newegg required at least 400W. Also the processor is pretty slow at 1.86 GHz, and could use replacing too. So needing a new PSU, CPU, and GPU, as well as a new disk drive which is broken, I figured I mine well build a whole new PC.
Anybody else notice the ddr ram in the First post. :smug:

Thanks that actually looks a lot better than what I put together.
And what do I have some incompatible ram in my first post or something?
Edit: Oh the pins whoops.
Are you really only going to play Source based games? If you are then just get the 4670 and this PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371006. The CPU is fine for Source games.

Slightly better power supply.

I've always had a pretty out of date machine, so I tended to play Source games because the run pretty well even on older machines. I don't really want to limit myself to just Source games. I would like to be able to play games like Borderlands, Dragon Age, and Modern Warfare 2. I do appreciate you trying to save me some money though.
That's ok :3:
I understand what it's like - I used to be in the same situation before I built my first PC (Dells..). Definitely go for the full build if you are interested in newer games.
Get this HD over the 500GB Seagate: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136319&cm_re=640gb-_-22-136-319-_-Product
I think I am gonna go with this setup from taipans short list thread:

Antec Three Hundred black Steel ATX $55
Western Digital Caviar Blue WD3200AAJS 320GB $48
MSI 785GM-E51 AM3 785G HDMI Micro ATX $80
HIS H485FM1GH Ati Radeon HD 4850 1GB $130
COOLER MASTER eXtreme Power Plus RS-500-PCAR-A3 500W $55
A-Data 4gb ddr3 1333G (Pc3 10666) $90
AMD Athlon II x2 240 Regor 2.8Ghz AM3 $60
Sony Optiarc DVD RW BLACK SATA AD-7241S $29
I am going to stick with the 4770 though as it is a bit cheaper and does what I need.
Honestly a 640GB HD for me is much more than I need. I've had this computer for three years and am just barely over 100GB. Plus if i ever needed to i could take the hard drive from this computer and put it in the new one.

Hey that is my build. :hfive:
Well thanks to you this time next month I'll have a decent PC and still have money to pay for textbooks. Hooray.
I still would still like to know whether using and OEM version of Windows for personal use is legal. I would rather pay the extra $120 then somewhere down the line my copy of Windows be considered not genuine.

Yes it is.
Cool. Thanks.
It is, but you can't resell it. I'm not even sure if you can transfer it to a new computer, in fact.
no transfer isn't allowed.

No doubt that one is a better build, but it's a little too expensive considering I still need an OS, which would put the price close to a thousand. Besides like I said I am not looking for a top of the machine, just something that allows me to play newer games, something that my current computer doesn't.
