I like that the majority of the review was complaining about things that are easily fixed, if they have to scrounge for reasons to fault the game, it must be pretty good.l
the game runs fine for me (with the cap off - it was weirdly unplayable with the 30fps cap on) but im not going to go back to it until there is a way to remove the letterboxing that doesn't involve zooming in, because the black bars really do ruin the game completely, they take up nearly half of the screen.

This was my "horror game to look forward to of this year" kinda thing, but I really don't know if I want to pick it up. I think it's a safe bet to wait until the Steam Xmas sale and get it a little bit cheaper, along with some fixes to 60FPS bugs and the letter-boxing.
I got it for a fairly decent price off g2play, so I don't feel cheated in any way. Like I said, I could play it if I wanted to because it runs totally fine with the 30fps cap off, its just the letterboxing totally ruins it.

if you're already second guessing a game that you were looking forward to, you really shouldn't spend top dollar on it
I have ATI HD 7870 and 8 core how well with this game run.?
Been watching a youtube slideshow ...
sorry i mean lets play.
And god damn it's annoying, the plot seems interesting but 30 FPS makes it just looks bloody awful to me. And I'm someone who's never had issues with 30 FPS in the past. It's actually hard to watch thats how bad it is.
And visually it's nothing special either.

Not everyone has the technical know-how.
I'm not too bothered by the fps limits/borders since those can easily be disabled but the whole aspect ratio thing sounds like bullshit

It's a review of port quality, not the game itself.

Changing the aspect ratio zooms the camera in, cutting off the sides of the picture like an old 'full screen' dvd release.
So until somebody figures out how to change the aspect ratio then pull the fov back it's going to stay this way.
Aspect ratio example:

Also, r_skipglare 1 removes the weird ass color grading.
i'll probably wait a month or so before i actually put my hands on this game.
Am I blind or is there no difference between those comparison screenshots in the article?

no, i think the point is the settings barely do anything

Well if a game fails at stuff that is easily fixed, it often has the most egregious faults already. You dont have to go into the minutae then.

It changed minor things involving shadows, AA and reflections. But you can't straight up configure the game's actual graphics normally, so even with all the options turned down, it'd basically not look all that different from everything maxed out besides uglier shadows.
Considering it's IdTech 5, that means it has less options than both Wolfenstein: The New Order and RAGE, which weren't the greatest themselves but at least configured the graphics. Any in-depth graphical changing for Evil Within is external files and console commands it seems.

Either the RAGE or Wolfenstein New order method of increasing FOV is bound to work.
The difference between Wolfenstein and this is that Wolfenstein is optimized really well, this isn't at all.

some guy on another forum was looking at this and he said they've disabled the FOV commands

not to worry though, flawless widescreen looks like its about 75% through a fix for the black bars and I'd imagine it'll be out by the end of the week

They removed the convar in Wolfenstein New Order too.
Find the PAK file that has player.def, (it might be named differently but its certainly a .def file if they still use that method/format) look for the setting there, in Wolfenstein it was just named "FOV".
7zip can open and edit PAK files afaik, winrar also might be capable of doing so.
