How much performance boost do I get by overclocking a intel i7 920 from 2.6ghz to 3ghz?
Can I doo it with the stock cooler? My temps are really low atm, like 25° idle and 30° full load.
Will it raise the themps to a critical level?
You do not need to overclock an i7.
[editline]edit[/editline]
I'm not saying you shouldn't, I'm saying that it's probably not THAT necessary considering you have an i7.
Also, A stock cooler should be ok, but sometimes you may run into heating issues. Get a nice cooler and some nice thermal paste before doing it, don't wanna damage it.
You'll probably be fine.
Get a decent cooler and you can get it to 3.7 without a problem.
OK thanks.
I will try it.
What is the worst that can happen if i overclock it to 3ghz?
Stability problems if you push it too much, and sometimes over heating, if it ever gets past 60C :P

I had speed step enabled on mine before I OC'd it. It ran at 2.92 GHz or something and it worked fine. 3 Ghz from 2.6 is nothing.
Just don't go from 2.6 Ghz to 3 Ghz like that. Slowly increase it from 2.7, 2.8 and so on and so forth. I OC'd my 720 to 3.2Ghz and I got BSOD'd 3 min. into Prime95 but when I did it slowly I'm now at 3.1. Ghz w/o changing voltage.
Yea yea, i said from 2.6 to 3ghz. but it was obvious that i slowly increase the speed...
What are critical temperatures for that processor? So I can know if i Overclocked too much...
Anything past 60C and your cooking eggs.
Increasing the core clock won't result in much temperature increases, however if you are overclocking enough that you need to increase your voltages to regain stability for the clock you want, then you will see much higher temperatures.
As long as you don't increase the voltage to reach the clock you want and it is still stable then you are fine with stock cooler.
If you could post a link to your mobo, I could tell you if you need to cool anything besides the cpu itself. It is possible to fry other parts of your mobo overclocking your cpu.
I'm pretty sure people trust HW Monitor more than SpeedFan. I've had issues with SpeedFan before. It would never report (or control) my vid card's fan.
Yea, but 18°C difference is a little bit too much...
Come on, its about 20% more/less.. A such big error?
HWMonitor is more widely used and trusted. Never heard of Speedfan and glad I never used it.

Use CPUz.
First of all, why the fuck would you wanna overclock a quad? Hardly, and programs or games out there require a quad. Overclocking it isn't going to do very much, and its actually completely pointless. Duo core I could understand that, 3 core not so much. And quad? Is completly pointless...
Why?
Give me a valid reason for not overclocking my i7 920...
From the benchmarks on the net i see a nice gain in most games by overclocking the 920.
Let alone any CPU
I was able to overclock my i7 920 to 4.5Ghz on a TRUE. Temps were too hot though, and I needed 1.5v.
Yes, I'm crazy, no, I sold it.
:v:
Ok, Got it to 3,2Ghz stable. no crashes or BSODs or so..
Temps are around 60° under load
Is it too high?

Remember it has stock cooling
60 under load is fine. Never over 70.
