I wonder if this is going to be like that DA2 expansion where they tried to make the combat more like Origins but instead just gave everyone a ton of health and called it "tactical" It looks like they tried to Dark Souls like combat but completely missed the point on why that's fun. Which is kind of funny when you think about it because in the Banner picture those knights look almost exactly like Gough and there's an armour set in the game that's basically the Elite Knight set.
They should've sticked to DA:O combat and a moddable engine. DA:O mods gave so much replayability and the mod tools given were amazing.
The combat in Dragon Age 2 was the exact same as Dragon Age Origins. The only difference was that it actually mattered if your attacks physically connected and the animations were faster. Sure, enemies coming in waves was stupid but how combat functioned was the same.
The only good thing to come out of DA2 was the Legacy expansion. Because it was about the Grey Wardens, the Darkspawn and the old Tevinter mages. Nobody wanted this stupid mage-templar story.

AoE spells ended up becoming hilariously overpowered in DA2 but the general combat system was pretty much the same. That in mind, the actual encounter design in DA:O felt better than DA2 which probably led to the combat as a whole feeling better.
My biggest problem with DA2 was the lack of environments. I just played through Awakening and it has way more locations than DA2 and it's just an expansion that takes less than 20 hours to beat
Combat in DA2 often got boring as hell because like half the enemies in the game are just fodder that you can instant kill by the group with your stronger abilities. As opposed to the enemies in DAO who were more or less on nearly equal footing as players so you really had to stop and think about how to best exploit everything at your disposal.
"heres a guy with a big shield now you can strafe around him and hit him in the back" this is what BioWare consider "tactics" and challenging gameplay reminder that bioware are an incredibly trashy company
What's wrong with having to dodge attacks and backstab people? That sounds like Witcher 2 combat to me, and that shit was awesome.

Gameplay wise they're completely different
i feel like playing through DA:O again

That looks fucking stupid. Here's 3 abilties mapped to three butons. You have to pause the game and swap them out with a wheel if you want to use others. There better be an entire toolbar from 1 to = for my skills, not that consolized skill shit that I can't stand

I assume the PC version will have a bar like always.
not buying it until I hear good reviews DA2 was a waste of money and I'd rather not repeat that

If I am being honest I much enjoyed DA:O's combat over The Witcher's, though they're really not comparable.
Looks decent
At first I couldn't stand DA:O's combat, it was pretty odd how I could back my dude away from everyone but he would still get hit because the enemies attack animation had already started, but it grew on me. I haven't played DA2 yet, but I'm planning on it.
Best thing in DA2 was the combat really. Glad they're sticking to it
Best thing in DA2 was the combat really. Glad they're sticking to it
Yeah I'm with you on that one, in DA:O I quickly discovered that being a warrior is pretty much useless compared to just simply rolling mage. I remember installing different mods and starting 3 different playthroughs and all of them ended with me just being useless. DA2's combat to me was better than DA:O's combat but it definitely lacked the any sort of use of tactics which was something I really missed. I still remain hopeful Bioware does something great with this as this is pretty much their last stand to me as if this turns out horrible or disappointing I will not be purchasing any Bioware products again.
I want them to allow the bar the bottom to be even more expandable. In DA:O my mage had too many abilities to fit on it and then I got even more abilities in the expansion. I just want a second row
