I find it annoying that the internet in the Carribean is better than the in UK

I'm currently on holiday in Barbados and I have a wired broadband 3mb internet connection in my hotel room, not only is it faster than my 2mb (at best) connection, it is also more reliable. My point being that how can the internet be better on a relatively undeveloped island, in the middle of the carribean ocean, than in the UK? Fucking piss take. /rant
Less traffic I would imagine.

Because it costs less to upgrade their infrastructure

I'd imagine being a hotel, they pay for more bandwidth.

That and the fact there might be a underwater cable to Florida.
All very valid points, but it just feels so wrong and rediculous that it is like this.

Mmhm.
I actually download faster than this from many places.

Dear god, at least they have it.

I get 11mbps and yet it's still slow as assfuck

Fuck, I was gonna say that. I live here, and I got a 384k connection and 10 gigs of bandwidth a month.
It's fucking EXPENSIVE.

Plus, you lag in MMO games (World of Warcraft, Guild Wars etc...)

Anyone else whine, and I gut you.
Unless you have 56k, in which case, what the fuck is wrong with you man.

Yeah Broadband in South Africa is so bad that everyone just uses mobile broadband. It's a hell of a lot easier and faster.
I'm on bethere, it's marvellous.
Yup
Stunted, just because your internet sucks, doesn't mean the rest of the UK is that bad. In most of the UK you can at least get speeds closer to a 8mbit, which isn't great, but it's ok for Europe
I'm with Be as well, all maintenance is carried out at like 3am so you never get downtime, never had it cut out on me and it's always extremely fast. The only downside I've experienced so far is that the router they give you is a bit crappy, other than that it's flawless.
I haven't heard of a UK ISP that can beat them for value and reliability.
Some UK ISPs are just god awful though, my parents use Tiscali which makes me rage whenever I have to use it. Once it hits 5pm you can pretty much forget doing anything remotely exciting on the internet.
England still uses copper wire, im on Virgin Media however. Optic Cable will always be better.

I was on tiscali before we switched to be, their customer service is absolutely shocking

That's a pretty shit speed for an optic connection really.

Virgin use the keyword fiber to drag people in but the download limits are tight.

I only have the 10mb package ATM.
I see.
I've been quite disappointed with Britain's tech development lately, they've been falling behind quite a lot.
I mean, Portugal already has Fiber optic cables wired out to mostly everywhere now (Except for rural areas damn them), and the UK has just started?
[editline]07:49PM[/editline]
Or am I missing something?

UPLOAD IS HORRID.
The goverment planned to charge £6 off the phone bill (and use some of the BBCs tax money?) to get the UK wired up to Fiber optic cables - in the next couple of years :(
Companies profit more if they keep speeds slow and charge more for them. Plus there's the whole infrastructure cost.
In the UK, BT is the centralized point that all ISPs have to deal with, and right now they're charging high prices. Unless you get cable, but Virgin are just faggots.

No matter how fast that pidgeon is, the packet loss is just too high for me!
