Colors sporadically fuck up in VGA (boot) mode, go to normal when resolution is up

Pretty much every other month, my computer will decide to say "fuck colors" and make my startup colors inverted (IE, blue is red, green is yellow or some shit like that)-- this problem goes away once the resolution goes to normal, and returns if I restart my computer. It lasts for about a month before going away again, and I still have no clue what causes it.
My screen is an acer x263w
My GPU is a ATI 4850 512mb
Ask and I'll supply any other information.
post gpu temps and full system specs
This occurs booting up cold, so I doubt gpu temps are the problem. Anyhow:
GPU temp (resting) is around 80-85C
CPU: Intel E7200 3.16 GHZ
Mobo: ASUS P5GC-MX
PSU: 650W
RAM: 4GB DDR2 667
Sound card: Creative X-FI (pulled from a dell XPS 400)
Hard drives: 500, 300, 250 GB. All pulled from old rigs.
Case: Antec 300
That GPU temp is high for idle
It's one of the old 1-slot 4850s-- from what I've read, it's a bit high, but ATI cards handle high temps better than nVidia cards. Then again, that information may be a bit biased.
Either way, my drivers are set to auto-change the fan speed if the temp's too high, and it does speed up when I play a game.
what is your driver verison
8.12
This may not be related at all, but what are your in-game temperatures?
Maybe something in your card is damaged because of overheating.
