Is it ok if I install games / software onto my plugged in external HDD?

I got a CORE external HDD 500 gb. It's 2.5 and in order to work I am required to plug it into power outlet. I noticed it's quite fast. It's connected to PC via USB. SO I was wondering is it ok if I install games and software onto it instead of my C and D (which are pretty overfilled) ? Someone also told me that I can take a HDD out of case and put it into pc, but I don't quite want to do that if I can use USB. So can I? or will there be some kind of game launch problem?

It's this.
it will work, if its USB 2.0 you will get shit performance and stuttering in game if its USB 3.0 your fine

It's USB 2.0
It will work. Game load times may be slower, but nothing else should be affected.
If you try using games on a USB 2.0 drive, you're gonna get a lot of problems
If it's anything like my old experience, Source is gonna crash every 15 minutes or so
Slower should be a compliment, you'll be lucky when you get a single map in HL2 loaded within half an hour.
So instead maybe I should try and take it out of case and install into pc?

If you have the cables and you know how, I'd do it
There's also a matter of registry entries if you try to play on another pc. If it can be removed, install it into your pc. It should use standard sata cables.
The loading times you guys say are not so bad.
I have not played source games with my external HDD, but AOE3 and GTA: SA ran well.
Friend used his external HDD to play GMod and TF2. Did not lag. Well, GMod did because of the fuckton of addons we had.
So nope, the USB2 external HDD-s do not have any problem.
Its possible, and a lot of the claims on here are greatly exaggerated. Although, a direct SATA or even IDE connection is going to give you better performance as far as loading times go.

Same, the loading times were a little slower, but everything worked fine.
I used to run all of my games off of a external HDD because my laptop had a 60GB HDD. they all worked fine and I never noticed any problems loading.
