I don't see why it wouldn't be Gold only. If you want to use your xbox for pretty much anything other than games, you need to be Gold.

Hold on, don't forget that you need XBL Gold to play against other people online. Then again, they might make it so that you can only play demos if you don't have XBL Gold. Or they might just make it a requirement to have a subscription to play on the new Xbox.
These rumors better be bullshit(the always online drm, costing 600 dollars). Plus, they need to remember that some people can't pay for the subscription, because they have other payments or they don't want to pay for something they won't use while they just want to play online.
