I know you had to pay, but I'm pretty sure that system has been closed now? Or I'm way too stupid to find the option to donate/get gold. Also I think way way back in 05/06 I think you could get it from pre-ordering G-Mod or participating in the betas. Though I may be wrong, this is just hearsay.

Used to have to buy Gold Member or do something worthy of a Mod giving it to you. Oh and Gold Member isn't much different, we get Gifs as our Avatars now and the max file size is 102.8 kb. We also have a Gold Member Section that only we can see.
