On a scale of 1-10.
I am only a 3...
Maybe 2...
I aim to be at least an 8.
Post something that you think was a Linux smart/fun/interesting/enjoyable/recommended thing to do.
And, give a little explanation so that lower numbers can understand a-bit about what you did.
Half an Example...

Second Half
Explaination: I made a small bash script* on my desktop, edited it with a series of echo commands, then "*@linux ~/Desktop chmod 777 hello.bat" to give full permissions so I can run it. Then I ran it from current dir with "./hello.bat"
[sp]My goal here is for me to learn about other peoples Linux stuff to better understand the extent of what I am able to do. =P[/sp]
Smarter than you as I know it's called a bash script, not a batch file.
Maybe 2? I installed Arch recently and am just really working my way through getting it set up to my liking.
So I can add nothing :v:

Useful post, I learned.
Fixed*
Thanks.
about 0, maybe 1, or a half. Thinking of trying arch on a vm sometime soon though.

You should chmod +x, not 777. 777 means anyone with access to the machine can read or write to the file.. disastrous, especially if you're running it!
Mayby a 4.
Here's something I did a while back
Install a mail server to receive and send mail from a domain you own and control.
Make sure that MX is setup correctly on the nameserver (In my case, I have one MX, 10:nikomo.eu) before starting.
SSH into your server, I used my server machine with CentOS.
Download iRedMail, current version is 0.6.1:
wget http://iredmail.googlecode.com/files/iRedMail-0.6.1.tar.bz2
Unpack:
tar xjr iRedMail-0.6.1
cd iRedMail-0.6.1/pkgs
bash get_all.sh
Install everything
cd ..
bash iRedMail.sh
Follow setup instructions.
Go to https://domain or server IP/iredadmin
Login as postmaster@your domain with the password you set during iRedMail installation.
Create a normal mail user in the users tab.
Login to webmail through http://domain or server IP/mail
Enjoy your own email address that tells everyone you're a pro, except everyone who knows how stupid easy it is to set this up.
Note: When logging into iRedAdmin, confirm it's https, or it'll give you a 404.
Note2: If you're having difficulties receiving mail from the outside, disable graylisting (on CentOS, It's /etc/policyd.conf, search for GRAYLISTING, set to 0, restart services, I restarted the whole machine because I'm lazy)
I use gentoo
I would say a 4-5 maybe
1, probably. Just installed Ubuntu and now GRUB isn't working. Shit.
Also, please check the thread out, my system needs first aid. Windows isn't deleted nor is any of my files.
I use gentoo
I use Arch, with my own kernel, since I don't wanna wait for compilation on netbook.
Guess we're even?

not quite. even arch holds your hand through the configuration more than Gentoo does.
I've compiled and installed programs, I daily use the terminal, I use Arch (installing/using Arch is educative), I love the folder /etc/, I've got my own MySQL and apache server and I control them with the terminal. I've done a tiny research on the Kernel last year.
I would say that's at least a 6 or 7. It's on a scale of ten! I mean I don't know everything about Linux but I do know sufficient!
I think I'm 3. I've messed with Arch in a VM for a while now.
8.
[editline]23rd November 2010[/editline]
Been using Gentoo for 2 and a half years.

Now we're talking.
4, because I hardly use it.
I'll use it more often when Steam is ported to Linux (Without using WINE)
I use gentoo, too.
I'm trying minix when I get some time.
Meh. Maybe 4. Disastrously trying to make my own kernel, or basically linux from scratch after that. Not sure about figuring out the package manager problem. I particularly like yum, but in my experiences, pacman is faster.
to name a few i am fluent in grep, awk and sed, though linux is pretty much my employment
Does grep have it's own psuedo language like awk and sed?
I'm decent enough at sed to do substitutions, but I haven't learned awk at all.
[editline]23rd November 2010[/editline]
Oh, and I can do insertions with sed.
i have a massive book somewhere JUST on grep and regex somewhere, you can do some pretty impressive things
I use gentoo, too.

minix kernel is vastly superior to linux but there isn't much software ready to go for it. if you can use slackware you can use minix though so go for it
[editline]23rd November 2010[/editline]
actually now that I think about it you could probably port gentoo's portage to it if you really wanted to.
Well, i've installed gentoo before and got it to work pretty well. Kernel did not boot fast at all though, so i judge myself at 8.
About 5 or 6. I plan to start Gentoo in a VM soon.
Nothing, I always wanted to try ubuntu but I'd fuck up.
Nothing, I always wanted to try ubuntu but I'd fuck up.
I think the only way to fuck up an ubuntu installation is to not pay attention or reboot it in the middle of the install like a certain fatfatfatty did
5-6.
I work with Arch, OpenSolaris, FreeBSD, and Nexenta.

now install gentoo to add a boost to your linux penis

nexenta is terrible why would you do that to yourself?
