Hello, my brothers birthday is coming up and I would like to get him a low-end computer that can handle some source games ( tf2, gmod, css ) on the absolute lowest settings. I have a spare hard drive, monitor, and power supply that I think is 300W. I am no absolutly sure what wattage the PSU us but I google'd the model number and i saw the same one that was 300W and the same model number. The model number and name is; Bestec Model: ATX0300D5WB. My budget is $350 maybe $370, but i would like to keep it as low as possible. I have some parts picked out, but tell me if i should change anything. If anyone one knows: Will my 300W PSU be enough to power this? If it can, could I use the extra money I didn't use for a cheat GPU? And, will everything work together? Oh, and I'm a little pressed for time so I can't save up more money, sorry.
The PSU is an IED and Intel HD anything is hilariously terrible, even for a budget build. I would go with an AMD build in a situation like this, you can get more bang for your buck. MSI FM2-A75MA-E35 - $60 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130662 G.SKILL 4GB DDR3-1333 - $20 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231423 AMD A8-5500 Trinity Quad Core - $105 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113288 Antec NEO 400W - $40 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371029 Coolermaster case - $50 ($40 with promo code EMCJHHB32) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119227 The A8-5500 also includes an integrated Radeon HD 7560, which is far superior to the several generations old Intel HD3000, which is based on tech from the early 2000s. This would be $265 without the Windows 7 license. You could drop my case recommendation and still use the bundle for the Windows 7 license and the case, but you'd still need that PSU.
Would this be acceptable intead of the A8-5500: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113283 I'm not sure if he needs a quad core, but then again i really don't know what the benefit is in-game. (I hope) the graphics aren't too bad on this CPU but i'm looking for a bit cheaper solution since i need to fit windows into the budget. Plus all of the games he will play will be on super low settings, and hes on a low resolution. Also would you recommend this motherboard?: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130661 It's $10 and still has everything he would need.
You can get a cheaper motherboard, but I'd stick with the A8-5500 if you could since it has a slightly better GPU (10-20% better than the CPU you selected.) And later on down the road when you or he gets some spare money, I think you can install a discrete HD75xx GPU and run it in CF with the integrated GPU and boost performance. You can also swap out the DDR3-1333 with some DDR3-1866 for more bandwidth for the integrated GPU to use.
Ok, thank you for your help. Will all of this be good for the build? That RAM is on an excellent deal! And yeah faster RAM speeds can really help boost APU performance, definitely worth it.
The build looks fine, but you could shave some coin off by getting a different wireless adapter. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166055 It may be USB, but I've bought a bunch of different Rosewill Wireless USB adapters and they've all been amazing. That RAM is also fine.

Just out of curiosity, would this build work with linux? I'm talking drivers and such. Linux should run on it, bar accelerated 3D. ATI has historically had crap Linux drivers with limited support. The open source ATI driver should be good enough if you don't plan on playing games on Linux.
I think he wants to play games so i may just get the windows bundle. Here's the final build.
