You don't write off an entire game based on a single black mark. A game can possess a problematic detail and still be considered a good game, just like how you can enjoy a game while recognizing its flaws.

It's not like you have to completely hate something because of just one bad thing and/or nitpick, that's just stupid. I love Mighty Switch force despite its fanservice-y/probably chauvinistic nature.
In the same way, you don't have to worship something as absolutely flawless just because you like it, nothing is perfect after all.
embarrassing faq they got there
I liked RPS when they actually wrote about video games and not all this meta social justice stuff. Can we just get rid of them? We may as well have Sarkeesian's twitter feed.
I liked RPS when they actually wrote about video games and not all this meta social justice stuff.
I don't know if you realize this or not, but as forms of both art and storytelling, video games are very largely affected by what's happening around the time they're made. That includes 'meta social justice stuff.'
If we're talking about the times they're made then I suppose I could point out the graphical limitations of Pac-Man and how difficult it would've been to point out gender in video games back then but Sarkeesian forgot to mention that. She then goes on to say that pink and purple are typical identifiers of gender while wearing a god damn purple and pink shirt/wearing pink lipstick which is just a smack in the face.
Also she says that females are "identified" in games while males are not which makes females the "exception" and alienated... Has she seen a modern male protagonist lately? They're all short brown haired, well toned and sometimes bearded individuals and if she spent so much time focusing on that game "designed by a 13 year old" called Dragon's Crown she'd maybe realise that the male characters in this are fucking muscly tanks
I don't read video game articles for the politics, i read them for the video games
then dont click on the thread no one cares what you want to read
Y'know I have no problem with people fighting for womens rights but in my books they're on completely the wrong front.
Each day, probably thousands of underage girls are being sold and bought as sex slaves in third world countries.
But sure, lets pump 1,000,000 dollars into making videos about how video games enforce negative stereotypes (maybe)

we have governments and police for that
FYI these are the same people that are boycotting PAX because of the dickwolves joke
I used to love RPS, now they are a fucking joke. It has become less about games and more about "muh equality & femenism"

Do you think media have no influence on our perspective of society, nor are they a representation thereof?
wow
shocking surprise
john walker wrote this
WOW
never would've guessed
Strawman arguments, blocking comments and cherry picking the worst feedback. They do say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
The only thing worse than self serving people like Sarkeesian using a hot button issue to make money off people is that the people she claims to represent are desperate enough for representation that they'll let her and John Walker's bullshit slide.
I liked RPS when they actually wrote about video games
But this is about games. It's exploring how social gender stuff manifests itself in videogames. If you do not care for this, that's cool, you can ignore it and it doesn't hurt you in any way.
Can we just get rid of them?
If you feel like that layer of games isn't relevant to your interests then that suggestion is kinda like a console-player suggesting to remove the Steam-Bot because the posts aren't relevant, idk.

Ms Pacman? Sexist?
Fucking seriously?
What,s next, Breakout being a simbolism for a penis and Pong being sexist?
games are art
games are sexist
wtf no it doesnt matter cuz theyre games as long as they're fun its ok
yeah but you can criticize art
uuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
A lot of art is sexist, a lot of sexist art is still good in most other ways.
There's no contradiction here, it's just quality not being one-dimensional.
The same goes for morality, if you take any two individuals it's very likely they'll disagree on something.
The only way we can sensibly work with this is ensuring that everyone gets a good opportunity to reach what they are capable of,
by removing limitations of freedom and working against things that perpetuate them.

lmao nobody in this thread is making that argument, in fact I haven't seen anyone use that in a while. it's pretty much general consensus that the problem with these videos is cherrypicking facts/feedback and misrepresenting them with one-sided arguments. just because something calls itself feminist doesn't mean it's instantly correct! The article's (haven't watched the video) not saying the Ms Pacman is sexist but that there is sexism in assigning video game characters of indeterminate gender being male.
I sort of agree, I think. It doesn't really take that much effort give indeterminately gendered characters ambiguous names.

Both the paddles in Pong are white
Both the paddles in Pong are white
Does that mean that the background is just a lot of dead black paddles? Holy shit
Does that mean that the background is just a lot of dead black paddles? Holy shit
Yes the paddle's color and resemblance to a phallus and the fact that the background consists of black paddles clearly tells us that the white male is superior and is "on top"
more brainwashing from the cis privileged.

And you've got nothing better to do have you? All you seem to do is follow me around and berate me and my posts by making condescending remarks and lightly flaming me all the time despite the fact that I've done nothing personally to you. Yet you still make an effort to insult me when I've never confronted you in such a manner. A simple rating would suffice but you just have to take it that step further than everybody else.

Her videos are targetted towards the narrative or visual designs made in gaming. Although those things might make sense in the game's context, it's also shows that society/culture gave creators that idea. The videos appear to be primarily targeted towards creators; to point out the lack of variation in narrative or design choices in gaming.

She mentioned that they were both identified, it's just that the "Ms. Male Character" is more identified explicitly. She criticized the shallowness of those characters; wearing pink clothing, high heels, a bratty attitude, high amounts of make-up, etc. It makes the game appear juvenile.
The male character equivalent would be the "edgy character"; sex-crazed, potty-mouthed, muscular, does criminal activities for fun.
